but they also don't want to put anything on tape that opponents can use. It ap- pears that PSU's solution is to wrap up spring drills with a conventional scrim- mage and open it up to a relatively small audience in such a way that the coaches won't be revealing a whole lot of classi- fied information. The decision to restrict attendance to just the freshmen didn't sit well with some other students and fans. After it was announced on March 17, Onward State published a collection of angry tweets from students insisting that if only one class is allowed to attend, it should be seniors. A student named Nick Buttgereit started a Change.org pe- tition demanding that students in their last year of school should be given prior- ity. Buttgereit was hoping his petition would garner 15,000 signatures. As of late March, it had gotten 11,685. Penn State officials said the plan for limited attendance at the football team's final scrimmage is part of a broader ef- fort to expand organized university ac- tivities over the next few months. That effort includes in-person commence- ment ceremonies in May and could con- tinue in the fall with a partially or entirely full Beaver Stadium. Said ath- letic director Sandy Barbour, "We are hopeful for the fall and continue to focus on the health and safety of our commu- nity and on providing the best opportu- nity for a full-capacity stadium for the I think that charging for admission and parking, and limiting the size of the crowd, would have been my best- case scenario, but they didn't ask me for my input, so I'm just shrugging my shoulders. I think the idea of inviting some students to attend is a good al- ternative, although they certainly could have room for any and all under- graduates who wanted to attend. Strange times, interesting decisions. It's a beginning. DavidM Penn State is sustained by its fans and their loyalty. They must realize how much we would appreciate a football fix. I am deeply disappointed by the lack of appreciation for the fans. The "excuse" seems to be that they want to show more than vanilla schemes. There are 14 other practices for that, we haven't reinvented the wheel here. I, for one, would appreci- ate a "can do" attitude toward a spring game. It has always been a popular success and should not be killed off by those who don't share our enthusiasm. Is this the same Penn State attitude that had us so ready to "fold our tents" on the whole season last year? Seems to me you're hurting a lot of good fans for very little rea- son. rtrexler Seems like a missed opportunity to help out the surrounding businesses that have been hurting this past year. Would have been nice to see them allow, say, 10K fans, charge $10 for parking and generate some more $$ from concessions, etc., while maybe helping out local hotels and restau- rants for the weekend. Maybe they're just not ready for hosting a crowd. Hopefully game days in the fall are closer to normal. NittanyLager We didn't have spring practice last year and it cost us. We have another new o9ense to install under Mike Yur- cich and new position coaches and need every hour allowed. I would much rather them get a full intense practice and run the entire playbook than worry about some scrimmage that's vanilla and won't advance the team. As long as we get full atten- dance in the fall, I can live without the Blue-White Game. We talkin' 'bout practice! mwaltrip This might be one of the most cru- cial springs for a number of positions and all positions on offense when you consider the new OC. Finding ade- quate depth across the board will be a big item on the checklist. The DE bat- tle and LB battles should prove to be interesting. Also DT and safety. On offense, getting the OL to jell while finding the right rotations at both guard and tackle positions will be very important. Then the QB battles for the second and third guy may sur- prise some of us. Also the competi- tion for the second and the third guys at wideout and flanker should prove to be interesting. For those who pay close attention to these things, this would have been a great year for at- tending a Blue-White Game, in my opinion. PSU4U In other words, every position is in 8ux. Agree, a Blue-White Game would have been enjoyable and perhaps some- what indicative of future performance. Oh well... bcrane1917 Spring football is a wonderful out- reach to the Nittany Nation. I cannot understand why people are allowed in to watch but we can't watch on televi- sion. Also, why aren't all students al- lowed in? My guess is that Sandy can't a9ord to pay stadium personnel minimum wage because of the in- creased 7nancial commitment to bas- ketball. lionel 027 Not allowing the seniors in is ex- tremely stupid, causes a lot of bad will for people on their way out. DandyDonII I have never seen so much faux out- rage about a football practice before. Y'all really don't have anything better to do with your April Saturday? WTNuke S I T E L I N E S B W I .
