It's no wonder Quinn was a can- didate for the Indiana Pacers' head coaching vacancy last fall at just 37 years old. The job ended up going to Nate Bjorkgren, but the notion that someone his age was even consid- ered is proof enough that he has the makings of a future NBA head coach. Back with the Heat for the 2021 season, Quinn is helping Miami con- tend for the No. 4 seed in the play- offs. Looking back on it, Quinn has as- cended so far since answering that questionnaire as a freshman at Notre Dame. The response he provided about his future may have proved accurate, but in hindsight he isn't so sure he put that much thought into it. He never even expressed an interest in coaching to Brey or his staff. "I probably put that on the ques- tionnaire because I knew I just loved the game," he said. "At the time, my focus and goal was just to be the best player I could become. Which, ob- viously, in my four years at Notre Dame, I was able to grow and learn quite a lot about a lot of different things. "I just knew, after I was done play- ing, whenever that would be, that being around the game of basketball, a passion of mine, would probably be in the cards." STAYING CONNECTED TO NOTRE DAME Prior to No. 3 Notre Dame's trip to Miami to take on the No. 7 Hurricanes in a highly anticipated 2017 college foot- ball matchup, Quinn made a friendly wager with longtime Heat power forward (and Quinn's teammate from 2006- 10) Udonis Haslem. If Notre Dame won, Haslem would have to dress up as a 6-foot-8 leprechaun. But a Mi- ami victory meant Quinn must don the Hurricanes' popular turnover chain — a gold Cuban link necklace in the shape of the school's "U" logo temporarily given to a defensive player after recording a turnover. The Irish, of course, got blown out 41-8 and Quinn's fellow coaches and the Heat players began to lam- bast him for his alma mater 's poor showing. " T h e t o u g h e s t p a r t w a s w e watched the game as a team," Quinn said. "We were on the road. It was not a pretty game for us. Things got bad pretty quickly. Everyone in the room was giving me a pretty hard time about what was going on. "The game itself was the hardest part, but throwing on the turnover chain for a picture wasn't the worst thing." The program he's closer to is the men's basketball team. He keeps in touch with Brey and watches their games whenever a demanding 82- game NBA schedule and frequent cross-country flights allow him to do so. Given his connections to Notre Dame, many fans have hoped that a return to South Bend could be in the cards for Quinn down the road, espe- cially given the success he's already achieved at just 37 years old. But if and when Brey retires, would Quinn even consider a return to the college game? "Honestly, I have a great love for Notre Dame," he said. "I re- ally haven't considered anything. It sounds bad, but my current focus is trying to make a playoff run this year and to be the best assistant coach I can be for the Heat. That's where I'm at right now." ✦ IRISH IN THE PROS M A R K E T P L A C E MEMORABILIA Vintage Notre Dame Memorabilia Augie's Locker Room ND Stadium Items, Jerseys, Helmets, Autographs and One-of-a-Kind Rockne Items.
