14 THE WOLVERINE JUNE/JULY 2021 INSIDE MICHIGAN ATHLETICS BY THE NUMBERS PHOTO BY LON HORWEDEL "Last year, I knew in my heart I loved Michigan and I had made it one of my goals to come back for a fifth year. Coach [Juwan Howard] pulled me aside prior to one of our practices before Se- nior Night last season and we had that conversation [about potentially return- ing in 2020-21], and there was no doubt in my mind — my answer was, 'Yes, I 100 percent want to come back.' "This year, I'm in a different point in my life and am ready for the next chapter, and I'll take all the lessons I've learned here and use them in the next stage of my life." — Fifth-year senior forward Austin Davis on Brian Boesch's 'Defend the Block' podcast PHOTO BY DARYL MARSHKE/MICHIGAN PHOTOGRAPHY 22 Strikeouts by junior ALEX STORAKO to set the school's single-game record in a May 5 win over Michigan State. She allowed just two hits and two walks in the complete-game shutout — her seventh of the season — and at one point struck out 13 straight Spartans. The 1-0 triumph moved the right-handed pitcher to 18-2 on the season and marked the No. 19 Wolverines' eighth straight victory. Amine, who competes for San Marino internationally, also took second in 2020 and third in 2019. To win the bronze, Amine topped Slovakia's Boris Makoev, the 2017 world silver medalist. It is the fourth world medalist that Amine has defeated in the last two years. His only loss at the event came against eventual champion Artur Naifonov of Russia by a 2-0 decision. The four-time All-American Amine will wrestle in the Olympics for San Marino this summer after placing fifth in the world at his weight in 2019, and could still return for another year of eligibility in Ann Arbor next winter. 22 Former Michigan football players who ended their collegiate careers in Ann Arbor have been chosen by the New England Patriots since the franchise's first draft in 1961, with fifth-round linebacker CAMERON MCGRONE being the latest example (No. 177 overall pick). In fact, head coach Bill Belichick and Co. have taken at least one Wolverine in each of the last three events — defensive end Chase Winovich in 2019, and linebacker Josh Uche and offensive lineman Michael Onwenu in 2020. The most notable to wear the winged helmet then play for the Patriots, of course, is quarterback Tom Brady, who helped lead the club to six Super Bowl championships during his 20-year stint in Foxborough.
