SUMMER SURGE Lions go on commitment spree, as 2022 class nearly doubles in size from late May to early July | A lot has changed for Penn State's Class of 2022 since the end of May. The NCAA ruled that on-campus visits could resume on June 1, and James Franklin and his sta& took full advantage of the opportunity. From June 1-27, Penn State hosted seven prospect camps in which more than 1,300 high school ath- letes worked out. In addition, more than 120 prospects took either an uno+cial or o+cial visit. Also, the sta& traveled to two satellite camps and hosted a seven-on- seven tournament in which more than 50 high schools participated. College football recruiting is truly back in all its glory, and its return a&orded the sta& the opportunity to add to an already impressive Class of 2022. That was evi- dent during the .rst four days of July, when .ve prospects committed to the Nittany Lions. July 4 was particularly busy, with three defensive linemen – Zane Durant, Kaleb Artis and Tyreese Fearbry – all an- nouncing their commitments within a seven-hour span. Durant, who holds a four- star rating from Rivals.com and plays for Lake Nona High School near Orlando, Fla., took an o+cial visit to Penn State June 18-20. He ulti- mately narrowed his 15 scholarship o&ers down to three schools, with the Nittany Lions edging out Miami and Indiana. "I committed to Penn State because of the family atmosphere," Durant said. "I love the vibe up there. Why not Penn State? Their whole sta& really bonded with me and my family while I was up there, so I felt like it was only right to commit to Penn State." Durant earned an o&er in January a=er he totaled 40 tackles, including 15.5 tack- les for loss and 6.5 sacks, during his junior season. At 6-foot-1, 260 pounds, he's ex- pected to play defensive tackle for the Nittany Lions. He wasn't the only interior defensive lineman to commit that day, as Kaleb F O O T B A L L R E C R U I T I N G PHILLY STYLE Wylie is from Imhotep Charter, the same school that produced former Nittany Lion defensive end Shaka Toney.
