I noticed in the May 2021 edition of The Wolverine that Juwan Howard has been awarded the honor of Associated Press Na- tional Coach of the Year. I remember in late January 1994 reading the obituary in one of Detroit's newspapers for Randy Walkowe, who died at only 13 from AIDS and cancer. He was a devoted Michigan fan, and was befriended by Juwan and other members of the Wolverines basketball team. The Walkowe family credited Juwan (Randy's favorite) and the team with adding a year to his life. Juwan Howard is more than a great player and coach. He was and is, as my people put it, a true Mensch. Congratulations to Juwan and all of the U-M basketball team on their great 23-5 season! Alex Kovnat West Bloomfield Township, Mich. Mr. Kovnat, Thanks for reminding us of that great story. You'll be pleased to know that in our Year In Re- view section, there is plenty more to read about How- ard and his Wolverines, our Male Team of the Year. Be Heard! Send your letters to: Wolverine Letters • P.O. Box 2331 Durham, NC 27702 Or email: ryantice@comanpub.com Letters may be edited for clarity or length. Juwan Howard's squad advanced to the Elite Eight and was named The Wolverine's Male Team of the Year. PHOTO BY LON HORWEDEL FROM OUR WEBSITE On U-M head coach Jim Harbaugh and players at Big Ten Media Days … • There seems to be a quiet confi- dence amongst all of them. They all seem more comfortable and confi- dent. I love Harbaugh as an underdog. Those Stanford teams came to prove something! To me, this team seems like that. benchmarkappinc • He seemed much more engaged than in previous years. I know that means very little and the results are what count, but he seemed very eager about just plain, old coaching football. kev56 • Jim Harbaugh is a great man and representative of U-M. He's someone I'd want my sons to play for. bobigblue • That's great but ultimately means nothing. Wins are what matter. grantgro • Looks normal. Real question is come late August, are we ready to play or not? Shock the world and go 9-3, or do the meh at 7-5. None of these are impacted by what he said today. CobraShika • He appears to truly be reenergized, much closer to the guy who took the job in 2015 than in recent seasons. We need the 2015-16 Jim Harbaugh. Dalemac • I guarantee you no one will feel bet- ter about the program due to this press conference if there are lackluster re- sults this fall. friedbergboy • In all honesty, I think this staff will go down as one of Harbaugh's best. Younger, full of energy and probably the most hungry. michfn1 • Totally agree, I'm anxious to see how this season goes, it will tell us what we have for the future. I pray this works out for him and the program. I know he gets the blame, and rightfully so. But I know he wants this program to be great so bad. menttor615 60 Day Free Trial, Use Code BLUE60
