THE BIG PICTURE
MAIZE, BLUE AND GOLD
Canada won its first Olympic gold in women's soccer Aug. 6 in Tokyo, and
two Wolverines helped power the historic squad — former captain and
two-time All-Big Ten selection Shelina Zadorsky (2010-13) and current junior
Jayde Riviere. Zadorsky is pictured sixth from the left in the second row,
while Riviere is fifth.
Both saw action as substitutes in the gold medal victory over Sweden,
which went to a penalty shootout. It was the first gold medal match in Olym-
pic history to go to penalty kicks and the first to go to extra time since 2008.
Zadorsky, who also won a bronze with Team Canada in the 2016 Rio
Games, played all 90 minutes in two games, while Riviere also did so in
two and saw 11 minutes of action in the penalty-kick win over Brazil that
clinched a spot in the semifinals. In the final contest, Riviere played 27
minutes and Zadorsky checked in during the 120th minute and played just
under a minute of match time.
More about current and former Wolverines in the Olympics — who combined
to win 11 medals, including three golds — can be found on pages 53-54.
