UNDER THE DOME THE THIRD POWER The third year of a Notre Dame head coach has generally made or broken his career. Fortunately, after last year's 12-1 record, Brian Kelly appears to be on the right path. Years ending in "3" also have been either feast or famine at Notre Dame: 110 Years Ago: 1903 Fullback Louis "Red" Salmon becomes the first Notre Dame player named an All-American — third team by Collier's — while his 8-0-1 team outscores the opposition 291-0. 100 Years Ago: 1913 Under the guidance of its first full-time head coach and director of athletics, Jesse Harper and captain Knute Rockne, Notre Dame embarks on a bold national scheduling expedition and stuns powerful Army 35-13 to put itself on the map, and follows with victories at Penn State, St. Louis (Christian Brothers) and at Texas for a 7-0 finish. On Feb. 2, future "Mr. Notre Dame" Edward "Moose" Krause is born. 90 Years Ago: 1923 With an all-junior backfield not yet dubbed "The Four Horsemen," head coach Rockne directs a 9-1 finish. On May 21, Ara Parseghian is born. 80 Years Ago: 1933 Just like in 1913, Notre Dame shocks unbeaten Army, this time in the finale, and led by Krause. But a 3-5-1 finish leads to the ouster of third-year head coach Hunk Running back Lee Becton and No. 2 Notre Dame knocked off top-ranked Florida State in "The Game of the Century" in 1993, but the Seminoles went on to capture the national title. In four home games, Notre Dame fails to score a single point. 70 Years Ago: 1943 Third-year head coach Frank Leahy wins his first consensus national title while playing possibly the most challenging schedule ever. Senior halfback John Lattner becomes Notre Dame's fourth Heisman winner in 11 years. 50 Years Ago: 1963 Interim coach Hugh Devore, a co-captain 30 years earlier, sees Notre Dame finish 2-7, with the Nov. 23 game at Iowa cancelled because of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy a day earlier. Less than a month later, 40-year-old Parseghian is hired as the head coach after posting a 4-0 record versus the Irish from 1959-62. 40 Years Ago: 1973 Parseghian wins his second consensus national title after a thrilling 24-23 victory versus No. 1 Alabama in the Sugar Bowl on Dec. 31. It came a year after a 40-6 loss to Nebraska in the Orange Bowl, his largest margin of defeat. 30 Years Ago: 1983 Selected the preseason No. 1 by Sporting News because it's the magical third season for head coach Gerry Faust, Notre Dame finishes a disappointing 6-5 before upsetting Boston College (19-18) in the Liberty Bowl. 20 Years Ago: 1993 Despite facing a "rebuilding" year and the infamous Under The Tarnished Dome: How Notre Dame Sold Its Soul For Football Glory book, head coach Lou Holtz leads the Irish to a 10-0 start and No. 1 ranking after upsetting No. 1 Florida State 31-24. The Irish finish No. 2 to the Seminoles with an 11-1 record after defeating Texas A&M 24-21 in the Cotton Bowl. 10 Years Ago: 2003 One year after receiving "Sportsman of the Year" honors from Sporting News, second-year Notre Dame head coach Tyrone Willingham sees Notre Dame fall to 5-7, including blowout losses to Michigan (38-0), Florida State (37-0), USC (45-14) and Syracuse (38-12).
