24 SEPT. 25, 2021 BLUE & GOLD ILLUSTRATED gave Notre Dame its first double-digit lead of the game, 17-6, with 9:59 left in the quarter. Stats: The Notre Dame defense didn't contain Purdue as well as it did in the first two quarters. The Boilermakers gained 150 yards to the Irish's 96. Most of the damage (105 yards) came through the air. Items: Purdue drove 50 yards down the field in nine plays to tack on an- other field goal and cut its deficit to 10-6 with 11:06 left in the third … Purdue answered Davis' score with a six-play, 75-yard drive that ended in a two-yard touchdown pass from Plum- mer to wideout Milton Wright … Purdue gained 31 and 32 yards on back-to-back plays on the drive. The first was a rush by freshman King Doerue. The second was a pass from Plummer to junior wide receiver David Bell. FOURTH QUARTER NOTRE DAME 27, PURDUE 13 Top Moment: Notre Dame either needed a long, time-consuming drive or a definite touchdown when it got the ball near midfield leading 20-13 with 6:16 remaining. It got the latter. Wil- liams roared through the middle of the field, breaking tackles and making de- fenders miss on his way to a 51-yard touchdown rush. Stats: Purdue outgained Notre Dame 101-96 in total yards despite being out- scored 10-0 in the frame by the Fighting Irish. The Boilermakers ran for minus- three yards, though.
