22 OCT. 2, 2021 BLUE & GOLD ILLUSTRATED Feature Performer: Pyne completed back-to-back passes to Davis for a total of 32 yards. The second completion was a good read on an out-route to the left sideline. With Coan going down with an ankle injury, Notre Dame needed some reassurance from its backup quarter- back that the offense could still operate. That's exactly what Pyne provided. Stats: Wisconsin controlled the quar- ter with 116 total yards to Notre Dame's 32. The Irish lost a net of six yards on the ground in the quarter, while Wisconsin put up 83 yards through the air. Items: Wisconsin completed a 35- yard shovel pass to Mellusi and scored three plays later on an eight-yard throw from Mertz to sixth-year senior wide re- ceiver Kendric Pryor that tied the game at 10 with 9:53 left in the quarter … Coan sustained his injury on a third-and-20 situation with a six-yard completion to sophomore tight end Michael Mayer … Pyne was sacked and lost a fumble on the first play of his second drive. FOURTH QUARTER NOTRE DAME 41, WISCONSIN 13 Top Moment: Tyree's kickoff return touchdown changed everything. It gave Notre Dame its lead back, it rejuvenated everyone in the stadium wearing blue and gold — from fans to players and coaches. It set the tone for Notre Dame to play well on both sides of the ball in the final frame. Feature Performer(s): Notre Dame linebackers Jack Kiser and Drew White scored on interception returns for touchdowns one minute and 12 seconds apart. Kiser's return was a 66-yarder while White's went for 48 yards. Stats: Wisconsin outgained Notre Dame 110-60, but that was mostly a re- sult of the Badgers trying to play catch- up after the Tyree touchdown. Items: Wisconsin went 0 of 4 on third down to finish the game 1 of 14 … Jayson Ademilola forced a fumble on a sack, and junior defensive end Isaiah Foskey recov- ered … Pyne's 16-yard passing touchdown to Austin was the first score of his career, passing or rushing. The touchdown put the Irish ahead 24-13 with 9:34 remaining … Hart notched his second interception of the game (and career) and returned it 32 yards to the Wisconsin 23 yard-line … Do- erer's second made field goal of the game was good from 37 yards out to widen the Irish's advantage to 27-13 with 3:20 left. ✦ NOTRE DAME 41, WISCONSIN 13 Sept. 25, 2021 ✦ Attendance: 59,571 Soldier Field ✦ Chicago Quarter 1st 2nd 3rd 4th Final Notre Dame 0 10 0 31 41 Wisconsin 3 0 7 3 13 ND WIS FIRST QUARTER WIS Larsh 37-yard field goal 11:48 0 3 Drive: 5 plays, 26 yards, 1:54 SECOND QUARTER ND Doerer 51-yard field goal 8:44 3 3 Drive: 16 plays, 45 yards, 6:29 ND Austin 36-yard pass from Coan (Doerer kick) 4:48 10 3 Drive: 5 plays, 51 yards, 2:18 THIRD QUARTER WIS Pryor 8-yard pass from Mertz (Larsh kick) 9:53 10 10 Drive: 4 plays, 56 yards, 2:01 FOURTH QUARTER WIS Larsh 27-yard field goal 14:14 10 13 Drive: 9 plays, 30 yards, 3:44 ND Tyree 96-yard kickoff return (Doerer kick) 14:01 17 13 NU Austin 16-yard pass from Pyne (Doerer kick) 9:34 24 13 Drive: 6 plays, 46 yards, 2:40 ND Doerer 37-yard field goal 3:20 27 13 Drive: 4 plays, 4 yards, 1:35 ND Kiser 66-yard interception return (Doerer kick) 2:13 34 13 ND White 48-yard interception return (Doerer kick) 1:01 41 13 ND WIS Total First Downs 17 16 Rushing 2 4 Passing 14 10 Penalty 1 2 Rushing Attempts 32 28 Yards Gained Rushing 65 79 Yards Lost Rushing 62 5 Net Yards Rushing 3 74 Net Yards Passing 239 240 Passes Attempted 37 41 Passes Completed 21 18 Had Intercepted 0 4 Percent Completion 56.8% 43.9% Yards Per Attempt 6.5 5.9 Yards Per Completion 11.4 13.3 Total Offensive Plays 69 69 Total Net Yards 242 314 Average Gain Per Play 3.5 4.6 Fumbles: No.-Lost 2-1 2-1 Penalties: No.-Yards 11-93 5-33 Punts: No.-Yards 7-324 6-299 Average Per Punt 46.3 49.8 Average Net Punt 44.0 43.2 Punt Returns: No.-Yards 3-20 3-16 Kickoff Returns: No.-Yards 3-132 5-87 Interception Returns: No.-Yards 4-146 0-0 Fumble Returns: No.-Yards 0-0 0-0 Miscellaneous Yards 0 0 Possession Time 31:36 28:24 Third-Down Conversions 5-16 1-14 Percentage 31.2% 7.1% Fourth-Down Conversions 1-1 0-1 Percentage 100.0% 0.0% Sacks By: No.-Yards 1-3 6-33 Prior to going down with a leg injury in the third quarter, graduate student quarterback Jack Coan played well against his former team despite being under immense pressure throughout and getting sacked five times.
