yler Warren hadn't taken a snap
in nearly two years, not since his
senior season at Atlee High in
Mechanicsville, Va. But when the red-
shirt freshman lined up at quarterback
against Auburn, with Penn State facing
second-and-goal at the Tigers' 2-yard
line in the third quarter, he wasn't feel-
ing nervous.
Warren wasn't worried that layers of
accumulated rust were going to shake
loose all at once. Nor was he worried
that the Nittany Lions were about to run
this particular play for the first time in
public, unveiling it in front of 109,958
fans at Beaver Stadium and millions
more who had tuned in to the nation-
ally televised prime-time broadcast.
And he definitely wasn't worried that
his days as a full-time quarterback were
long over, having ended in 2019 when he
switched to tight end upon his arrival in
State College.
That his quarterback days were over
was kind of the point. The Lions were
looking to catch Auburn off-guard
with their unusual spin on the wildcat
Penn State's top three tight ends have
teamed up to give the offense a lift this fall
