C O M P enn State's class of 2022 has its fair share of special athletes, but running back Nick Single- ton may just be the most special of them all. Since his freshman season at Gov- ernor Mifflin High in Shillington, Pa., Singleton has grabbed the attention of just about everyone who follows the state's high school football scene, and it's easy to see why. With a 244-yard performance on Oct. 8 against arguably the best opponent in Governor Mif- flin's conference, Exeter Township, the future Nittany Lion surpassed more than 5,500 yards rushing for his career. Through six games this season, Singleton was up to 1,264 yards rush- ing and 25 touchdowns. With Governor Mifflin looking like the team to beat in Class 5A, he could end up ranking among the best ever in the state in sev- eral categories. To get a better feel for what makes the 6-foot, 210-pound Singleton one of the nation's best running backs, Blue White Illustrated caught up with his coach, Jeff Lang, who's been watching him play since he was in youth league football. Lang explained that it's far from just his physi- cal attributes that have put Singleton in the position he's in today. BWI: Nick seems incredibly locked- in during games. What kind of a leader is he? I rarely see players that focused when a team is up big like you guys were in your 54-21 win over Exeter. JEFF LANG: He's always like that. I've known Nick for ages. He's the same age as my son, so they played Little League together. I've been able to see him play just about every football game he's ever played. He's always been such a fierce competitor.
