S
hortly after freshman running
back Logan Diggs danced into
the end zone late in the fourth
quarter of Notre Dame's win
over Navy, the Notre Dame student sec-
tion proceeded to do its thing.
Dozens of students were pressed up-
ward horizontally like a barbell in a gym.
Up and down. Up and down. Thirty-
four times — one for each point the
Fighting Irish put on the scoreboard.
"That's a lot of pushups," a voice in the
Notre Dame Stadium crowd called out.
Pushups. Human shoulder presser.
Call them whatever you want, the voice
was right: there sure were a lot of them
by the end of Notre Dame's 34-6 victory
over Navy. It didn't always look like that
would be the case.
Notre Dame was shut out in the first
quarter. Navy (2-7) controlled time of
possession in the first frame, and the
No. 10 Fighting Irish (8-1) didn't make
the most of the few chances it had. The
offense went three and out on its first
two possessions.
"It's a defense that you just got to
kind of be patient and keep prodding,
and I think we did a nice job there and
broke the game open," Notre Dame head
coach Brian Kelly said.
