60 THE WOLVERINE FEBRUARY 2022   BASKETBALL RECRUITING out victories along the way. Their only loss came to Sierra Canyon in the Iolani Classic. Despite coming up short, he still claimed MVP honors." He'll continue to work to prove people wrong. "Every time I step on the floor, I know I'm going to have a handful of doubters," McDaniel said. "So just proving them wrong every day just gets me excited. "Just looking over, seeing [an oppo- nent's] face down because they thought something that wasn't just makes me better and gets me hype every day." OTHER SIGNEES ARE ALSO PLAYING WELL In Bradenton, Fla., wing Jett Howard continues to impress at IMG Academy. The 6-7 standout and Michigan signee, On3's No. 33 overall player nation- ally, scored 13 points to help lead IMG to a 57-53 win over defending national champion Montverde (Fla.) Academy Jan. 17 at the Hoophall Classic Tourna- ment in Massachusetts. In scouting him, TheWolverine.com analyst Jeff Schiller sees a talented player who should fit well at Michigan while playing for his father. "He's a kid with decent, though not elite, athleticism for a high-major col- lege basketball player, but one with a very high court awareness and ability to see the floor," Schiller said. "In the one half I watched, he had a couple of nice assists, buried all four free throws he at- tempted, took the ball to the hole strong (but missed a few finishes) and took one corner three that went in and out." It would help if he played in a system in which court awareness and ability to facilitate were utilized, he added, but that's not the IMG way. "While he looks, to me, like a kid who can play and help right away, he'll likely be a secondary or tertiary option early in his career — i.e., a guy who plays off others rather than a guy who will carry others on his back," Schiller added. "That's not intended to be a negative — guys who can play at the level I think he can play at early are a good thing — just an attempt to create an expectation level for him coming in." Howard entered the game with Mont- verde averaging a reported 16.5 points per game. His best showing came in December when he put up 26 points on Mouth of Wilson (Va.) Oak Hill Acad- emy, making 7 of 9 three-pointers. Branson (Mo.) Link Year Academy standout and Michigan signee Tarris Reed is also off to a good start. He was averaging 14.5 points and 7.3 rebounds per game as of mid-January for a loaded team, earning praise from several around the country for his inside-out play. PrepHoops.com saw him at a De- cember tournament and offered this: "The Michigan recruit is part of a big and talented front line for a Link Year team that is one of the best teams in the country. He displayed his power game in the low post to go along with his abil- ity to run the court and knock down his turnaround jumper from 10-12 feet. He has strong hands to catch the ball and good footwork to maneuver in the post." Schiller watched him play in the Hoo- phall Classic and came away impressed. Reed put up 16 points and 13 rebounds in only 18 minutes during a win over Prolific Prep. "I love Tarris Reed," Schiller said. "He's very mature and refined, has tremendous hands, has very nice touch away from the basket — including a three, a free throw line jumper and 4 of 4 from the line — and near the rim, runs the floor hard, and can even pass out of the high post. "Link plays him in both the high and low posts, and he's really good at both spots. There are guys who were higher rated in the game, none were better, or even as good, as was Reed. He's more of a wide body than an explosive leaper or extreme quickness kind of kid, but he uses his body well. He's absolutely going to be able to help right away, and he's going to be a monster after a year … to get in shape and strengthen his body." Finally, forward pledge Gregg Glenn of Fort Lauderdale Calvary Christian (6- 7, not ranked by On3) is solid, but prob- ably won't be an immediate contributor. "Michigan signee Gregg Glenn and [teammate] Carl Cherenfant had great days," PrepHoops.com noted at the December City of Palms Tournament. "Cherenfant scored on all levels while being the biggest guard on the floor. Glenn's double-double showcased how tenacious he is on the boards. "Four of his 10 rebounds came on the offensive end, ending in putbacks. He also hit two of his three attempts from deep." He could be a solid role player for the Wolverines down the road. ❑ Michigan signee Tarris Reed was averaging 14.5 points and 7.3 rebounds per game for a loaded Bronson (Mo.) Link Year Academy as of mid-January.
