4 CAVALIER CORNER F ourth-year men's tennis player Ryan Goetz comes into the spring sea- son with a career-best No. 5 ranking in doubles with partner Chris Rodesch. During his time with the Cavaliers, Goetz has won the 2019 ITA Atlantic Region singles title and the 2020 ITA All-American Consolation Doubles crown, while also helping to lead the team to the ACC regular-season and tournament titles last season. Here are five questions with the history major: Cavalier Corner: What can we expect from the team this season? Goetz: "I think we're expecting great things. We're one of the hardest-working teams in the country. I think all of us bring a lot of passion and discipline to the team and UVA, so I expect us to give our best each and every day, and that's all you can ask for." Cavalier Corner: Who is the one player on your team you least want to face on the court? Goetz: "That's a tough one. Probably Iñaki [Montes]. He's a guy that I do embrace playing. That doesn't mean I like playing him, but I think I have a good time playing him, and it's always a challenge trying to figure out how to try to beat him in practice. I'm just thankful he's on our team." Cavalier Corner: What makes you and Chris Rodesch such a good doubles team? Goetz: "We complement each other's games really well. His serve and my ability to clean up at the net really complement each other. And he hits big shots all around, not just his serve but also forehands and back- hands, which helps me at the net. "Our chemistry is really good. We've had a whole year of playing to- gether and getting to know one another off the court, too. So it just makes the whole experience really fun playing with him." Cavalier Corner: What's your favorite place on Grounds? Goetz: "I love the Rotunda. I love the Lawn. I love walking from class and looking at it. I love the architecture, the different columns, the differ- ent aspects of the Lawn. "The historical aspect of it makes it even more special. I think that re- ally draws my attention as well." Cavalier Corner: Why did you choose to major in history? Goetz: "I love reading about history. I love watching TV about it. I just love learning about it in general, and it's just one of my favorite things to do off the tennis court. I've read plenty of historical accounts, biographies, secondhand sources on just all aspects of it. "I just really enjoy it. Right now, I'm reading a really good book, 'The Presidents Club' by Michael Duffy and Nancy Gibbs. That's a very fun one. Coach [Andres] Pedroso recommended it to me, and I'm really enjoying it so far." — Melissa Dudek Goetz has excelled in both singles and doubles during his career with the Cavaliers.
