FEBRUARY 2022 7 S uccess and improvement can be measured in many ways in athletics, but on the track, it comes down just to the numbers. Third-year sprinter and jumper Jada Seaman has thrived in this environment. Her impact on the track has been on full display from the minute she donned the orange and blue. As a first-year, Seaman won an ACC title in the long jump in a season where she set two school records in the event, advanced to the NCAA Championships and earned All-America honors. In her second-year campaign, she claimed the ACC indoor and outdoor titles in the long jump and was an All-American both seasons. Beyond track and field, Seaman has always had an interest in graphic design and digital imaging. It started out as a hobby. When she was younger, she downloaded Photoshop and began to explore the powerful graphics software program, teaching herself the ins and outs. This hobby eventually became an outlet to express her creativity and a side of her personality that doesn't always show up on the track. "Track me and outside of track me are two different people," she explained. "People tell me I look intimidating on the track, and I don't even realize it. But outside of track, I would say I come across a bit more relaxed." Seaman, like most college students, was trying to decide what career path she would pursue after graduating from UVA. "I was actually watching 'Mad Men' and I thought this is exactly what I want to do," she said. "I like the way brands speak to an audience through advertising. That's what I want to do." Seaman, a marketing major, is now working towards her goal of becoming a creative director. Step one is putting together a portfolio of some of her best work to show prospective employers. She is con- stantly searching for ideas and ways to improve her work, while putting in the time to continue performing at an All-American level on the track. "I never really sit down and stay in one place and work for hours," Seaman said. "If I have ideas, I always have the notes app on my phone. I will just jot things down and come back to it, and it just builds that way." With the focus and determination that she displays on the track combined with the creative, innovating attitude she shows outside the sport, Seaman is ready to carve out a career for herself in advertising once she hangs up the spikes. — Quinn Hull behind the scenes Third-Year Long Jumper And Sprinter Jada Seaman Last year, Seaman claimed the ACC indoor and outdoor titles in the long jump en route to All-America accolades in both seasons.
