MARCH 2022 THE WOLVERINE 85   MICHIGAN BASKETBALL Jan. 17. "He's getting all the support from the coaching staff, from the personnel on campus and making sure he's in a good place mentally to rejoin the team, if that's what's best for him." A team spokesman said he missed the Rutgers game for personal and pri- vate reasons. Head coach Juwan Howard wouldn't comment further on his status other than to say he'd be there for him. Jackson thanked several people on his way out, including mentors, coaches and teammates. "After the time I have taken away, I've decided to enter the transfer portal be- cause I feel that's what's best for my fu- ture and my health," Jackson wrote on Instagram. "I wish the best for my family here!" Jackson committed to Michigan when he played for Toledo (Ohio) Maumee Val- ley Country Day. John Beilein was the coach at the time, but Howard re-secured Jackson's commitment when he took over for Beilein. Jackson also spent a year at national power Montverde (Fla.) Academy before arriving at Michigan, though he didn't receive much playing time. A lanky and athletic guard, Jackson looked to be rising on the depth chart, notching 15 minutes against Nebraska Dec. 7, totaling five points and five re- bounds. He scored eight points in 14 min- utes against Southern Utah, his last game in a Michigan uniform. Jackson was well liked among his team- mates and often helped host when Michi- gan coaches brought in recruits. "That's somebody who I consider a good friend and somebody I really am close with," sophomore center Hunter Dickinson said. "If that's what he thought is best for him, I fully support him. He has a bright future, and if he ever needs any- thing I'm definitely there for him." Howard echoed the same sentiments. "We wish him well," he said after an 85-79 win over Nebraska Feb. 1. "What a wonderful kid. Comes from a great fam- ily. Mom and dad — beautiful people. Zeb — great person. He believes that there's a situation out there that's better for him. "I wish him well. He'll have nothing but 110 percent support from me. If he needs me for anything, he knows I'm here for him." — Chris Balas JACE HOWARD MAKING THE MOST OF HIS MINUTES When he arrived at Michigan from Hol- lywood (Fla.) University school, former three-star Jace Howard didn't do so with the fanfare of some of his highly recruited teammates. The 6-7 forward was con- sidered a "glue guy" and an "energy guy" who was somewhat limited offensively. University School head coach and for- mer Michigan guard Ron Oliver, though, noted at the time how important guys like Howard could be to a program, and head coach Juwan Howard's son is proving it. Howard provided sparks in several Sophomore Jace Howard gave Michigan a spark off the bench and scored a season- high five points in an 83-64 victory over Maryland Jan. 18.
