Sports Directors' Cup, the University of Notre Dame had a
top‑10 finish.
During the 2012-13 academic year,
nearly 300 Division I teams tallied
points, which are awarded based on
each institution's finish in up to 20
sports — 10 men's and 10 women's
— with a maximum of 100 points for
a national title. Stanford won the Cup
for the 19th year in a row.
Thirty-seven sports in all could be
included in the standings, but many
of them are not offered at Notre Dame
as a varsity sport: men's and women's
water polo, men's and women's bowling, men's and women's gymnastics,
field hockey, women's hockey, rifle,
skiing and wrestling.
Nevertheless, Notre Dame's ninthplace finish was the school's second
best in the award's two-decade history, behind its No. 6 placement during the 2005-06 academic year. The
