Spring Practice Insider Developmental Updates: Calhoun & O'Connor EAST LANSING - This week, some real rubber will start to hit the road as spring practice comes to an end for Michigan State. We'll get to peer inside the thoughts and minds of the team's veteran players as they conduct the annual spring game draft on Wednesday. Then we have the annual Green-White Game on Saturday. Today on Spartan Plus, we'll take a video look back at a couple of players that I think will be the source of a lot of attention later this week: Sophomore DE Shilique Calhoun and freshman QB Tyler O'Connor. Calhoun has had a very good spring, retaining quickness and speed to go along with improved power, having gained 15 pounds since the bowl game. He also has made progress from a technical standpoint. Calhoun on gaining weight: "Personally I felt like I needed to get bigger. That's not against anyone that is 240 because different people play different types of ways and are stronger in certain areas, but I felt like I needed to gain a little more weight to be able to play well at Michigan State." Calhoun on his technique: "I'm a long ways away but I'm working every day to get better. Things are getting better especially with Coach Burton. I'm understanding things better and working at it." ** [An aside: Many, many times this spring, I have heard defensive linemen speak in glowing terms about the coaching they are receiving from new d-line coach Ron Burton. They like the practicality of his technical advice. Tyler Hoover told me that he likes the way that tips and corrections come immediately, in the middle of a drill.
