love the way he coaches. They all feel they are improving. Meanwhile, Pat Narduzzi is no longer spending as much time with the d-line. Last year or the year before, Narduzzi became the defensive ends coach. Technically, Ted Gill only oversaw defensive tackles last year. Now, Narduzzi is no longer coaching d-ends. He has turned it all over to Burton. This gives Narduzzi to provide more roving instruction to the defense as a whole during a practice.] ** Calhoun Player Development As we wrote in the February issue of SPARTAN Magazine, Calhoun very quietly had a strong game in the Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl victory over TCU. He didn't have a ton of snaps, but he made an impact when he was on the field - to the point that TCU's pass protection scheme began sliding its protection to account for Calhoun on his side of the line more so than Will Gholston on the other side. Still, Calhoun's technique was often a mess. "After he went through the film, Coach Narduzzi told me that I did very well in the bowl game," Calhoun said. "He said throughout the year I was improving and working hard every day. But there were a lot of things that I could get better at, like my footwork. I was stepping at my toe instead of stepping at my hand." Doing what? "I was stepping on my toe instead of stepping to my hand." Calhoun explained this to me. It's very simple, and something few of us might have recognized. But his first step (from his rear foot, his right foot) was often too tight to his other foot. Instead, that first step should be out front toward his right hand. "If you have your right hand up, you step toward that hand," Calhoun said. "If you step inside toward your toe, you lose your balance and it slows you down. "Little things like that, I've been focusing on this spring and I feel I've been getting better." Coaches and teammates agree that MSU has three pretty intriguing d-ends right now in Calhoun, junior Marcus Rush and sophomore Joel Heath. Dantonio complimented Heath for his play in last weekend's Jersey Scrimmage II.
