But Calhoun is the guy who is probably most likely to give MSU's pass rush a boost. It needs a boost. Two years ago, MSU has arguably the best pass rush in the Big Ten. Last year, despite MSU's overall statistical prowess on defense, the Spartans had trouble applying pressure with a four-man rush. Narduzzi thought this was a major problem in allowing some of the comeback losses which plagued the Spartans in 2012. Calhoun needs to help provide improvement in that area. He is regarded as a better pass rusher than Gholston, and needs to prove it with production. We may have a glimpse of that improved production this weekend. "Coach Narduzzi told me if I knew the scheme and what everyone was doing then he would let me loose," Calhoun said. "That means knowing what the linebackers are doing, and the guys behind me. Last year, I knew my job, but I didn't know about the people behind me, what they were doing. Toward the middle of the year I started to understand it more like, 'Okay, well I am going into the A-gap, but I'd better get into that A-gap because that linebacker is coming.' That's important, understand the importance of playing with discipline because of how it affects everyone else. So I definitely learned a lot more in the second half of the year, compared to the first half." He wants to show it on Saturday. As for the bowl game, we have some Spartan Plus Chalk Talk analysis of some of the things Calhoun did well against TCU in MSU's most recent game, the Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl. Because the game was played so late at night, post-game coverage and reporting was a bit lacking from the press corps as a whole. Follow-up coverage of MSU's victory was almost non-existent. Even if you the fan were up watching the game past midnight, you might not have noticed the things Calhoun did on that night that we rarely saw from a Spartan player during the course of the regular season. In the video to follow, we break down some of the things Calhoun did well, four months ago and 15 pounds ago. We expect to see even more development from him on Saturday in the Green-White Game.
