Winner Tennis Player Jarmere Jenkins Capped His Stellar Career With Two Championships C By Greg Waters oming into the 2013 season, UVa standout Jarmere Jenkins boasted an impressive list of career accomplishments. After a stellar fourth-year campaign, that list is even longer today. male athlete of the year jarmere jenkins In July, Jenkins was selected as both the 2013 Intercollegiate Tennis Association National College Player of the Year and the ITA/Farnsworth National Senior Player of the Year. He finished the year with a 42‑6 record and ranked as the No. 1 singles player in collegiate men's tennis, won the 2013 NCAA doubles crown, was named NCAA Tournament MVP for the national champion Virginia Cavaliers and was runner-up in the NCAA singles final — just missing a rare college tennis triple crown. The final accomplishment: Jenkins graduated in June with a degree in anthropology. "That is a very impressive résumé for anyone that has played college tennis, and it shows how much value he has added to our team as a competitor, teammate and overall student-athlete," UVa head coach Brian Boland said. "I could not be happier with Jarmere's development as a student, tennis player and person during his time at UVa. I believe wholeheartedly that he will be a success on the pro tour and in whatever else he chooses to pursue when he retires from the game." His teammates say what truly distinguishes the UVa Men's Athlete of the Year is his character, demeanor and work ethic. He's not a talker; he leads by doing. "More than anything he's led by example and has set the tone for how I'm going to need to be a leader on our team next season," rising third-year Mitchell Frank said. "He also kept the younger guys in check when they started to get a little cocky, and that's something few people see. "That's been invaluable to our success and because its coming from someone like Jarmere, not the coaches, its much more powerful." As one gets to know Jenkins it's easy to be struck by how gifted and talented he is, and inspired by his humility. "He's a very humble player," Frank said. "He doesn't give himself enough credit for the work in puts in. He's always been very quiet and let his racket do the talking." Quiet maybe, but quiet with impact. "Jarmere will tell you himself that he tends to be a little shy off the court, which at first I thought was very interesting considering how electric he competed on the court," Boland said. "He has always been very soft spoken, but he has never been afraid to show anyone that he cares for them. "Jarmere has one of the biggest hearts that I have ever coached, and I have witnessed several examples of this, not just with his teammates, but with fans and even my own children.
