4 CAVALIER CORNER In April, the Virginia Athletics Foundation received the largest single commitment in its history when a former University of Virginia student-athlete made an anonymous donation of $40 million. "This former athlete and their family have supported our annual fund for many years and have made commitments to an endowed scholar- ship and facilities," Virginia Athletics Foundation Executive Director Dirk Katstra said. "We are incredibly thankful for this estate commitment and the countless ways it will benefit future student-athletes and coaches." The bequest is part of the University's $5 billion Honor the Future capital campaign. The Virginia Athletics Foundation's Honor the Future goal is $500 million, and this commitment brought the VAF's campaign total to $443 million. "This type of philanthropic giving helps to ensure UVA athletics will remain a leader in college athletics and positively impact generations of student-athletes," UVA Director of Athletics Carla Williams added. "The commitment of this very special family is inspirational to every- one who loves the University of Virginia." The Virginia Athletics Foundation has launched its 2022 annual fund effort with a target of $20 million to support scholarships, aca- demic affairs for UVA's 750 student-athletes and the operational budget. Phase I of the Athletics Master Plan complete, including the construction of two natural grass football practice fields, and Phase II, the Football Operations Center, broke ground on June 2. Phase III will include the construction of an Olympic Sports Complex. "To have a gift of this magnitude come from a former athlete is pretty special, regardless of the sport," Katstra told NBC 29 after the announcement was made. "It just really is a remarkable gift. … I can't say enough of how special that gift is and how special the family is. "We're hopeful that gifts like this can inspire others to do what- ever they can at whatever level. College athletics is changing pretty rapidly across the country, and we certainly want Virginia athletics to be the very best it can be so we can compete for championships in every sport." cavalier sports The record-setting commitment is expected to make a significant difference in the lives of future student-athletes at UVA.
