C O M LINEBACKERS PERSONNEL POSITION COACH Manny Diaz: When he joined Penn State's staff in December, Diaz became only the sec- ond linebackers coach of the James Franklin era. Brent Pry oversaw the Lions' linebackers for eight years before leaving to become head coach at Virginia Tech. Diaz succeeded Pry as defensive coordinator and has also taken charge of this position group. Diaz was an outstanding high school football player in his native Miami. He didn't play foot- ball while attending Florida State, but he be- gan his coaching career in Tallahassee, serving as a graduate assistant with the Seminoles in 1998 and '99. His first job as a position coach was at North Carolina State, where he led the linebackers from 2002-03. Diaz became a de- fensive coordinator for the first time at Middle Tennessee State in 2006. He later served in the same capacity at Mississippi State, Texas and Louisiana Tech. In 2016, he became de- fensive coordinator at Miami (Fla.) and held that position for three years. Diaz's first head coaching job was at Temple, but his tenure with the Owls lasted just 18 days. When the Hurricanes' head coaching job became available in December 2018 following Mark Richt's resignation, Diaz headed back to Coral Gables. He went 21-15 in three seasons before being fired on Dec. 6, 2021. Six days later, he was hired by Penn State.
