Now he's completely locked in on becoming a two-time champ when it comes to league titles. If he pulls it off, he'd be the first Michigan starting quarterback in 30 years to capture back- to-back conference title rings. Elvis Grbac stands as the most recent king in that category. Grbac started during Michigan's Big Ten championship seasons of 1990, '91 and '92, con- cluding a string of five consecutive conference titles by the Wolverines. Michael Taylor gets credit for beginning that streak. Taylor started the majority of Michigan games during the 1988-89 seasons, both of which saw the Wolverines come out on top in their league. Rick Leach posted Big Ten titles in three straight seasons behind center for the Wolverines. He started as a true freshman in 1975, but U-M fell short of the title. Not so in '76-'78, when the Wolverines shared conference championships in each of those seasons. Prior to Leach, Dennis Franklin rang up three straight Big Ten championships at quarter- back. The Wolverines in those seasons frustratingly posted a 30-2-1 record, but never went to a bowl game. Forty years earlier, quarterback Harry Newman helped the Wolverines to a trio of Big Ten titles, from 1930-32. All-American Benny Friedman turned the title trick for the Wolverines in 1925 and '26. Irwin Uteritz pulled off the feat in 1922 and '23. In the past 100 years of Michigan football, seven starting quarterbacks have earned back- to-back Big Ten championships. McNamara has the chance to become No. 8. — John Borton Michigan Quarterbacks Repeating A Big Ten Title Is Rare Senior Cade McNamara enters 2022 with a chance to be- come the first Michigan starting quarterback to win back- to-back Big Ten championships since Elvis Grbac, who led the Wolverines to three straight titles from 1990-92.
