THE WOLVERINE 2022 FOOTBALL PREVIEW ■ 153 FOOTBALL RECRUITING recruits Will Johnson and Keon Sabb. The Wolverines can now afford to be selective in the 2023 class as they only look to take around three or four on the back end. Arguably the most important target on the board is Mustang (Okla.) High's Jacobe Johnson, the nation's No. 1 athlete and No. 40 overall player per On3. Johnson is being recruited as a safety but can play multiple positions. Michigan is trending in the right direction for four-star Florida commit Aaron Gates, the No. 12 athlete in the country per the On3 Consensus. The Sharpsburg (Ga.) Trinity Christian product made an unofficial visit to Michigan for the spring game and returned for an official visit in early June. The Wol- verines have made him their top priority at the nickel position. There are several names to know at the cornerback position. Michigan is shooting its shot with elite prospects like Arlington (Texas) Martin's four-star Javien Toviano, the No. 28 overall prospect and No. 3 safety nationally; and Miami (Fla.) Gulliver Prep's four-star Daniel Harris, the No. 39 overall prospect and No. 4 cornerback nationally per On3. Michigan is also squarely in the mix for Baton Rouge (La.) Woodlawn's four-star Jordan Matthews, the No. 150 prospect and No. 17 cornerback in the land per the On3 Consensus; Kankakee (Ill.) High's Jyaire Hill, the No. 7 athlete and No. 241 player nationally according to On3; and Tallahassee (Fla.) John Paul II's four-star Makari Vick- ers, the On3 Consensus' No. 87 player and No. 8 safety in the country. Special Teams Need: 1 Committed: 1 Michigan's first commitment in the 2023 recruiting class came by way of Ann Arbor Huron kicker Adam Samaha. Unlike kicker/ punter combo Tommy Doman in the last cycle, Samaha is more of a pure kicker and is expected to focus on field goals, extra points and kickoffs. Samaha is widely regarded as the best kicker prospect in the country and is ranked as a five-star special teams recruit by Korn- blue Kicking. ❏ Join today with our special offer for ALL Michigan fans: GET 12 MONTHS FOR $1.00 GET 12 MONTHS FOR $1.00 (regularly $99.99) Sign up now at TheWolverine.com!
