AUGUST 2022 1 Dear Cavalier Fans, As the summer draws to a close, we look forward to the start of the academic year and our fall sports season — especially the beginning of the Fralin Family Head Football Coach Tony Elliott's era for Virginia Football. Many of our student-athletes have been in Charlottesville this summer to take classes and train for their upcoming seasons. It has been a busy summer "off the field" as well. We completed the fundraising for the second phase of the Virginia Athlet- ics Master Plan and officially broke ground on the new Football Operations Center. Construction will continue as we look forward to the grand opening in the spring of 2024. We are grateful to each of our donors who has supported the Master Plan so far. We are now turning our fundraising efforts to the final phase, which includes the Olympic Sports Center and the renovation of the McCue Center. Many of our teams have been located in temporary facilities for several years, and we need to complete this final phase as quickly as pos- sible to move them into permanent facilities. As much of the conversation in the media has been about conference realignment and NIL (name, image and likeness) opportunities for student- athletes, our staff has been focused on scholarship support and operational budget needs within the athletics department. With a scholarship expense of $22 million this year and growing operational needs within the athletics department, the investment to be competitive in each of our 27 sports is sig- nificant. Reaching our $20 million Annual Fund goal this year, endowing new scholarships and securing new gifts to fund operational budget needs will be critical to supporting more than 750 student-athletes this year. If you haven't made your 2022 Annual Fund commitment, we encourage you to do so now — even if you traditionally wait until later in the year. Re- newing your pledge now helps us forecast spending for the remainder of the year. If you can pay your pledge by September 30, it will help us fund our first semester scholarship payment to the University. For this payment, you will re- ceive additional bonus priority points. As we welcome all student-athletes this fall for classes and athletic com- petitions, we appreciate the tremendous support that our donors provide and the impact you have on the student-athletes' experience across Grounds.
