30 CAVALIER CORNER We all want to see the athletic department succeed! And it takes everyone for that success to happen. However, we need to remember that our coaches are the only individuals who are permitted to recruit prospective student-athletes to participate in intercollegiate athletics. VAF members cannot make telephone calls to prospective student-athletes, engage through in-person contact with prospective student-athletes, evaluate prospective student- athletes, write emails to prospective student-athletes, send text messages to prospective student-athletes, or contact prospective student-athletes via social media. NCAA rules only permit coaches and staff members to engage in these activities. If a prospective student-athlete calls a VAF member, the member can accept the call but cannot engage in recruiting discussions. However, a VAF member can discuss things that in- clude general questions about UVA, Charlottesville, degree programs or living on Grounds. Anything about the athletic department or participating in intercollegiate athletics is prohibited. Even if a VAF member has a previously established relationship with a prospective student- athlete, such as a family friend or neighbor, NCAA rules preclude the member from recruiting the prospective student-athlete.
