BLUEGOLDONLINE.COM AUGUST 2022 53 IRISH IN THE PROS Irish player was making his own history in the MLB. Four days following the Irish series- clinching win over the Volunteers, for- mer Irish infielder Craig Counsell won his 564th game as manager of the Mil- waukee Brewers with a 10-2 triumph over the New York Mets June 15, making him the winningest skipper in franchise history. The milestone victory moved the eighth-year Brewers manager — the longest tenured in the National League — ahead of Phil Garner (563-617 record from 1992-99) on the all-time Brewers win list. Showered with beer by his players and well wishes from friends and family via social media, Counsell offered his ap- preciation. "It's humbling, for sure," he said. "I told the players, I feel a lot of gratitude for ev- erything they've contributed, too. They do the heavy lifting, and it's been fun to watch a great era of Brewer baseball." Through July 24, Counsel had led the Brewers to first place in the National League Central with a 53-43 record, 2.5 games ahead of second-place St. Louis. His overall managerial record was 582- 522 (.537 winning percentage) with 66 contests remaining in the 2022 regular season. A two-time World Series champion (1997 and 2001), a National League Championship Series MVP with Arizona (2001) and a 16-year MLB veteran, Coun- sell graduated from Notre Dame in 1992. A gifted Fighting Irish infielder, Counsell batted .306 during his col- lege career with 204 runs scored and 166 runs batted in. A disciplined hitter, Counsell walked 166 times and struck out 82 times. His career walk total re- mains an Irish program record. As a senior in 1992, Counsell batted .339 with 12 home runs and 63 RBI to earn MVP honors for that Irish squad, which featured 14 eventual MLB Draft picks. He was selected by the Colorado Rockies in the 11th round of the 1992 draft. Counsell — whose father John was a Notre Dame player and assistant coach during the 1960s and early 1970s — was born in South Bend then grew up in Whitefish Bay, Wis., near Milwaukee. — Todd D.
