TRACKING THE PACK SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2022 ■ 9 The On3 Consensus lists Cooley as the No. 26 recruit from the state and the No. 76 safety prospect in the country. Cooley is not the lone head-to-head battle with rival UNC for an in-state prospect that NC State has won. On July 10, On3 Consensus three- star offensive lineman Kamen Smith from Wilkes Central High in Wilkes- boro pledged for the Wolfpack after also making official visits to Chapel Hill and Virginia Tech, both of which offered. "It just felt like home from the start, really," the 6-4, 275-pound Smith said. Smith was a fast riser this spring on the recruiting trail. NC State offered April 25. Prior to that, his most notable other offers were Appalachian State, Liberty and Navy. Following NC State, Smith also picked up scholarships from his two other finalists, plus Duke, South Carolina and Wake Forest. The On3 Consensus has Smith rated as the No. 22 player in North Carolina and the No. 64 interior lineman in the 2023 class. As of Aug. 19, the NC State recruiting class consisted of 11 commitments and was rated No. 39 nationally by the On3 Consensus, including sixth best among ACC programs. ■ Ethan McDowell contributed to this report.
