56 THE WOLVERINE OCTOBER 2022 BY ANTHONY BROOME M ichigan women's s o c c e r w i l l b e without senior defender Jayde Riviere for the rest of the 2022 season due to a lower-body injury, she said in early September. This brings her U-M ca- reer to a close after ap- pearing in one game this season (Aug. 28 at Bos- ton University). Riviere missed time in previous seasons due to obligations to Team Canada, but this will be her longest absence from the team. She started 19 of 22 matches in 2021, totaling 1,620 minutes with 16 shots (5 on goal) last year. She was an Ac- ademic All-Big Ten per- former in 2020 and 2021 and made the Big Ten's All-Freshman Team dur- ing the 2019 season. Riv- iere completes her U-M career with 4 points (1 goal, 3 assists), having started 40 of 47 games played in Ann Arbor. The Wolverines were 2-2-1 without Riviere in the lineup as of Sept. 18 Riviere announced her injury status in a statement released to social media on Sept. 7: "Dear Michigan family, I feel obligated to share with you my current status within this beloved Michi- gan women's soccer program. Unfortunately, I have been suffering from a lower-body injury for some time now that will sadly affect further par- ticipation in the 2022 season. As a now senior, that essentially means that I have played my last game as a Wolverine, and I am deeply saddened by that reality. As a 14-year-old girl in Canada, I was ecstatic by the opportunity to attend such a prestigious school and rep the Maize and Blue colors on the field, but nothing could have prepared me for the amazing impact this institution would have on shaping my life over the past three years. I am forever grateful for the tremendous support and mentorship provided by both the academic and athletic staff here at Michigan. Balancing the rigor of academ- ics and athletics with my commitment to the Canadian National Soccer Program was not without its unique challenges. I specifically want to thank coach Jen- nifer Klein and her amazing staff as your unwavering 'life' coaching and character both on and off the pitch helped define the woman t h a t I h a ve b e c o m e . Without you, there is no Olympic gold medal. To my teammates, I mostly feel the need to apologize . My regular absence due to national commitments and injury meant that my participa- tion was limited through- out our seasons. Yet ev- ery single one of you has made my time here one that I cannot and will not forget. I value our memories and am grate- ful to have gained an ad- ditional new family. Lastly, to the fans who came out and supported this amazing program , you play just as big a role as the girls on the pitch do. Your unwavering support is something that I will never forget. As a team captain , I look forward to remain- ing at Michigan for the rest of the season to re- habilitate and support my teammates. I am hopeful of a full recovery and the pursuit of a professional soccer career down the road, but irrespective of what my next journey may look like, my blood runs blue and I will forever be a Wolverine at heart." Riviere's international career is head- lined by a goal medal with Team Can- ada at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo. She played 27 minutes in the gold medal match against Sweden, a 1-1 decision that was determined via penalty shoot- out.
