OCTOBER 2022 THE WOLVERINE 57   OLYMPIC SPORTS UPDATE Men's Cross Country The 29th-ranked Wolverines took home first place in the Big Ten Preview at the U-M Golf Course in Ann Arbor on Sept. 9. They were led by a first- place performance from senior Arjun Jha, who ran the 6-kilometer (3.73 miles) course in 17:56.9. Michigan also got top-10 finishes from junior Oli Rai- mond (third), senior Nick Foster (fifth), junior Zach Stewart (sixth) and fresh- man Peter Baracco (10th). U-M ran away from the team com- petition during the Big Ten showcase event, finishing 35 points better than Michigan State, which came in second place with 57 points. Iowa, Minnesota, Ohio State and Rutgers rounded out the field, respectively. M ichigan had the weekend of Sept. 16 off and is back in action in the Joe Pianne Notre Dame Invitational in South Bend, Ind., on Sept. 30. U-M will host the Big Ten Championships on its home course on Oct. 28, which will be an 8-kilometer run. Women's Cross Country Ranked 10th in the nation, the U-M women runners matched the men's performance with a first-place finish of their own in the Big Ten Preview event on Sept. 9. The Wolverines had five participants finish inside the top seven, led by senior Ericka Vander- Lende (20:54.8) in second place, just four-tenths of a second behind Ohio State's Addie Engel. Junior K ayla Windemuller (third), senior Sam Tran (fourth), junior Katelynne Hart (sixth) and graduate Samantha Saenz (sev- enth) also led the way. Michigan finished 40 points better than second-place finisher Ohio State (62 points) in the event. Northwestern, Minnesota, Rutgers and Iowa rounded out the field. U-M has a weekend off before return- ing to competition on Sept. 24 in the Cowboy Jamboree in Stillwater, Okla., on Sept. 24. Men's Soccer Oakland University (0-5-2) made its way to Ann Arbor on Sept. 19 for a date with the U-M men and battled to a 0-0 tie in the contest. It was a largely dominant performance for the Wol- verines, who outshot Oakland 27-7 on the evening, but were unable to tally a score in the match, dropping their record to 2-4-2 on the season. Michigan's two victories so far in 2022 came against Gonzaga (Aug. 28) and Detroit Mercy (Sept. 12). The squad next travels to Northwestern on Sept. 23 for an 8 p.m. TV tilt on B1G+ followed by a road game at rival Michi- gan State on Sept. 27 (6 p.m., Big Ten Network). Women's Soccer The Wolverines fell 1-0 to the Mary- land Terrapins in the Big Ten Con- ference opener for both teams on Sept. 16 in College Park. The lone goal scored in the contest came from Mary- land in the 70th minute of the match. Michigan (5-3-1 overall, 0-1-0 B1G) had its chances, but could not capi- talize on them. Senior Hannah Blake returned to the pitch for the first time since playing Butler on Aug. 21 and had a pair of shots on goal. The Terps finished the day outshooting the Wol- verines by a 10-9 margin. The Wolverines were without gradu- ate defender Margot Ridgeway in the game after she was issued a red card in the team's previous game against To- ledo. U-M is in action again on Sept. 22 at home against Ohio State at 7 p.m. Field Hockey No. 7-ranked Michigan (4-3 overall, 0-1 B1G) split a weekend home stand with Penn State (2-1 loss) and Cornell (3-0 win) on Sept. 16-18 in Ann Ar- bor. The victory over Cornell was the team's third shutout win of the season. Junior Lora Clark, senior Sarah Pyrtek and graduate Tina D'Anjolell were the goal-scorers, while sophomore Abby Tamer dished out a pair of assists in the game. The Wolverines outshot Cor- nell 31-4 in a dominant showing to close out the weekend. U-M returns to Big Ten play the week- end of Sept. 23 with games at Mary- land (Sept. 23, 6 p.m.) and Rutgers (Sept. 25, noon). Both games will be available via streaming on B1G+. Volleyball U-M is off to a 9-1 start this season coming off a 3-0 sweep of Bowling Green (25-17, 25-20, 25-22) on Sept. 18 at Crisler Center. This capped off a 2-0 weekend for the Wolverines in the Michigan Challenge after a 3-1 (25-16, 25-8, 22-25, 25-16) win over Missis- sippi State on Sept. 16. Junior Jess Mruzik led all players with 13 kills against Bowling Green, while senior Jess Robinson recorded a match-leading 7 blocks in the contest. The Wolverines are back in game ac- tion on Sept. 23 when they play a road game at Rutgers that begins at 6 p.m. ET. The match will be broadcast live on Big Ten Network.
