KATELYN TUOHY
Cross Country
Junior Katelyn Tuohy is already making a case to be considered a national
title contender in cross country this fall. She was named the U.S. Track and
Field and Cross Country National Athlete of the Week after winning the
prestigious Joe Piane Notre Dame Invitational on Sept. 30 in South Bend, Ind.
Tuohy finished the 5-kilometer race in 15:50.0, setting a Burke Golf Course
record. Among the runners she defeated was Alabama's Mercy Chelangat,
who won the cross country national title in the spring of 2021, was the
runner-up last fall and captured the 10,000-meter title at the NCAA Champi-
onships last spring. Tuohy was 12.1 seconds faster than Chelangat in South
Bend.
Tuohy is the first NC State cross country performer since 2020 to be named
the National Athlete of the Week. In June, Tuohy won the 5,000-meter title at
the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
