The award, named for former Heisman Trophy- winning Florida quarterback Danny Wuerffel, will be bestowed Dec. 8, and included on the list of names being considered is NC State fourth-year redshirt sophomore tight end Christopher Toudle. The communications major with a concentration on public relations was surprised to hear the news. "It was shocking, to say the least," Toudle ac- knowledged. "That was something that I really never would have seen myself doing four years ago, especially when I came in as a freshman. Now look- ing at it, it's crazy to even be recommended for it. It's an hon- orable experience." Toudle, a native of Wilmington, N.C., is active in the lo- cal community. He has worked as a volunteer at Partnership Elementary School in Raleigh and has helped mentor several students. In September, Toudle brought along a few of his fel- low tight ends for a family fun night at the school on the Fri- day prior to NC State's win over Texas Tech. "Definitely takes the stress off, gets my mind off of football for just a small amount of time," Toudle noted. "Sometimes you need it. It's just the nature of the sport. I feel like you need to have some time to let loose a little bit outside of it. "That community work sets me up for the rest of the week, all the time. So, it's really good for me." Toudle has also seen growing success on the football field. The converted receiver made 19 receptions for 190 yards and 4 touchdowns in a breakout 2021 season, winning NC State football's Alpha Rising Award for Excep- tional Improvement after the year was over. Through the first five games of the 2022 season, he had 7 catches for 65 yards and another touchdown. Much of Toudle's volunteer work has recently been centered around Raleigh, but he has not for- gotten his roots back home. He is trying to establish an annual youth football camp in the Wilmington region. In addition, he has helped raise money for the Al- zheimer's Foundation of America. Toudle said his parents instilled in him at a younger age a desire to give back. "Around middle school, that's when I started doing volun- teer work at homeless shelters," he recalled. "Some people might see it as a work-type environment, but I have a lot of fun with it," he added. During his time at Hoggard High School, he was encour- aged to do more volunteering. "I think just having that background really made me want to continue to do that on an individual basis," Toudle noted. "It's really awesome to see the joy that we bring to people with that platform. Really, just the smile on people's faces is something you can't compare to anything." — Matt Carter STUDENT-ATHLETE OF THE MONTH FOOTBALL REDSHIRT SOPHOMORE TIGHT END CHRISTOPHER TOUDLE TOUDLE
