8 ■ THE WOLFPACKER ■ WOLFPACK CLUB NEWS COMPLIANCE CORNER CAN I HAVE A STUDENT- ATHLETE OR THE TEAM OVER TO MY HOUSE FOR DINNER? Answer: Yes, donors/supporters can provide student-athletes with what is called an "oc- casional meal." There are VERY specific NCAA requirements about this, so contact the com- pliance staff and the coaching staff if you want to do this. WHEN I WATCH A GAME AND SEE A TALENTED HIGH SCHOOL PLAYER WHO I THINK WOULD BE GREAT FOR NC STATE, WHAT SHOULD I DO WITH THIS INFORMATION? Answer: Contact the coaching staff of that sport and pass along the information. You can- not be a recruiter for NC State, which means you cannot be communicating with recruits, but if you occasionally see a player who seems like a great fit for us, then by all means, pass along the information. If you are ever in doubt, contact the compli- ance staff BEFORE doing what you want to do! Thanks for everything you do to keep NC State safe! "I grew up in a farm in Johnston County and learned many valuable life lessons, developed a strong work ethic and cherish the memories of family ties. I continue to go out to the farm, and it will always bring back wonderful memories of growing up." What college did you graduate from? "Campbell University." What is your responsibility at the Wolfpack Club? "I greet donors, guests and students. A lot of times I can help with their account information. Or, if they need to see a staff member, I'll direct them accordingly. "I also cover the phones and answer donor ques- tions or transfer them to the appropriate staff mem- ber. "It's extremely important that I stay informed about changes and updates in the Wolfpack Club and NC State athletics so that I can keep donors better informed. "This year, I started to monitor our website at info@wolfpackclub.com. That includes respond- ing to donors, students and other Wolfpacker questions. I respond to most questions unless it's something that I am not that familiar with, and then I'll forward it to the appropriate person or department." What did you do before joining the Wolfpack Club? "I was a teacher in Wake County Schools for many years and did the majority of my teaching at Athens Drive High here in Raleigh. "I started at Athens Drive when it opened in 1978 and continued at Athens for 26 years. I taught mainly in the Child Development and the Child Care Services program and was department chair for career and technical education for several years before retiring." How did you get started with the Wolfpack Club? "I wanted to continue working part-time, and a friend, Nancy Edwards, was working in the Wolfpack Club and was continuously talking about how much she loved working at the Wolfpack Club. She convinced me to apply for a job. "Fortunately, I was able to get a job but was only thinking about working for a few years. Now I'm in my 15th year." What is your favorite part of the job? "I have many favorites, but meeting so many wonderful people, including staff and the best donors ever. I get to work a limited amount with students, and they are always so very polite and nice. It has been a true pleasure working at the Wolfpack Club." Family: "I have one son, Grady. Grady is a gradu- ate of NC State and played tennis for NC State. My daughter-in-law, Virginia, is a graduate of UNC. I have two grandchildren. My granddaughter Mc- Cauley just graduated from NC State this past year, and my grandson Gray is a graduate of Se- wanee in Tennessee and continues to live in Ten- nessee." What are your hobbies? "I was a runner for many years, and one of my fa- vorite things to do was run in road races. I ran in sev- eral 10K road races. The majority of the races were in Raleigh, one in Durham and a few in Johnston County. My son, being only 9 years old, would run with me in some races and always would get a side ache until he got close to the finish line and then he would start sprinting and wait for his slow mom at the finish line. "Now I go to the gym, do lots of walking and play bridge." Favorite TV show: "'Law and Order.'" Favorite movie: "'The Sound of Music." Favorite musical artist: "Elton John." Favorite restaurant: "Village Deli and Grill in Cameron Village in Raleigh." Favorite Wolfpack memory: "I loved watching my son play tennis for NC State. I don't think I missed a game. One of my favorite memories was NC State playing Campbell University and how excited I was to show off my alma mater. I have to admit, though, that I was extremely happy to see my son win the match." What is something most people don't know about you? "I was always teased in first and sec- ond grade about my middle name, so I reached a point that I never said my middle name if someone asked. Finally, I decided it was time to forget about being called the one pronunciation of Penelope, and now I'm happy that my middle name is Pe- nelope, and that my dad named me." WOLFPACK CLUB STAFF SPOTLIGHT: Gayle Matthews, Receptionist Matthews had only planned on working for the Wolfpack Club for a few years but is now in her 15th year on the job.
