DECEMBER 2022 THE WOLVERINE 43 BY EJ HOLLAND T he Wolverine traveled the country and saw a number of Michigan com- mits and targets in games last month. Here at the five best based on their per- formances and not necessarily how I would rank them. 5. MASON CURTIS (2024) LB • 6-4 • 190 Nashville (Tenn.) Ensworth At 6-foot-4, 190 pounds, Curtis is a man without a true position, but the Michigan commit ranked by On3 as the No. 143 overall player and No. 13 linebacker nationally was extremely impressive when I saw him live in October. Curtis finished the contest with 8 tack- les and an interception while playing edge, outside linebacker, inside linebacker, cor- ner and safety. Curtis was originally recruited by Mich- igan as an inside backer. However, he also has the skill set to rush the passer. A lot will depend on how Curtis develops at the next level. He has the frame to carry at least 30 more pounds. I personally like Curtis as a Taylor Mays- type of player (Mays was a three-time All- America safety at USC from 2005-07). Don't pigeonhole him. Just let him fly around on the defensive side of the ball. Curtis committed to Michigan this sum- mer and is still solid. 4. CJ SADLER (2026) ATH • 5-10 • 170 Detroit (Mich.) Cass Tech It's crazy to see a freshman on the list, but Sadler is that special. The do-it-all athlete plays wide receiver and defensive back for Detroit powerhouse Cass Tech and is expected to play some quarter- back next year as well. Sadler is a dynamic athlete. He's es- pecially dangerous with the ball in his hands and can take the top off a defense. He had a 70-yard touchdown against West Bloomfield in the first round of the playoffs. Sadler also is a playmaker on the back end, recording 2 interceptions in that same contest. He has plenty of time to grow and find a permanent position. Right now, it's easy to see that he'll be special. Michigan offered early and has hosted him for multiple visits. 3. AMIR HERRING (2023) OL • 6-3 • 290 West Bloomfield (Mich.) High West Bloomfield may have lost its opening-round playoff game to Cass Tech, but Herring still had a dominant outing. The On3 Consensus four-star (No. 20 interior offensive lineman na- tionally) and Michigan commit served up several pancakes and looked the part of a punishing road grader. Herring used his brute strength to physically over- power defenders and often finished his blocks by putting guys in the dirt. Herring projects as an interior offen- sive lineman at the next level but looked comfortable in pass protection while MICHIGAN RECRUITING NOTEBOOK Five Best Michigan Recruits We Saw Live In October In the second round (Nov. 4) of the Michigan state playoffs, Cole Cabana rushed for 178 yards and 2 touchdowns, and added 4 receptions for 34 yards in a 24-7 win over South Lyon (Mich.) High. Dexter will play in the Division 2 state semifinals on Saturday, Nov. 19 vs. Grand Rapids Forest Hills Central. PHOTO COURTESY ON3.COM
