TRACKING THE PACK JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2023 ■ 21 QUOTING THE PACK 33 Seconds that junior Katelyn Tuohy shaved off the course record in a title- winning effort at the NCAA Women's Cross Country Championships on Nov. 19 in Stillwater, Okla. Tuohy covered the 6-kilometer Greiner Family OSU Cross Country Course in 19:27.6, outdistancing Florida's Parker Valby by 3.2 seconds to claim the individual NCAA crown. 94 Points scored by the NC State women's basketball team in a road win over No. 10 Iowa on Dec. 1. Five players reached double figures for the 12th-ranked Wolfpack, and the result was a 94-81 victory in which the team recorded its highest scoring total over a ranked opponent since March 16, 1991, when it defeated No. 25 George Washington 94-83 in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. " It was just spur of the moment. It was amazing to go out there like that. It's joy." — DEVIN CARTER, redshirt junior wide receiver, after planting a Wolfpack flag at midfield of Kenan Memorial Stadium in Chapel Hill following his team's 30-27 double- overtime victory against the Tar Heels on Nov. 25 " Both women should be proud of their efforts today. In many years, the race Valby ran today would be enough to win an NCAA title. But not against the brilliant Katelyn Tuohy. Today belonged to her. 'This ranks probably the top [of my career],' Tuohy said. 'Individual win, team win. There's nothing better than that.' The Tuohy-Valby showdown absolutely lived up to the hype, and the good news is we should have many more battles between the two in future years — both Tuohy and Valby are just 20 years old. They are the future of American distance running." — LetsRun.com on the showdown between NC State's Katelyn Tuohy and Florida's Parker Valby at this year's NCAA Women's Cross Country Championship " When you walk away with the individual title and the team title, that's a very good day. Just like any season, there have been some ups and downs. I don't think we nailed it team-wise in any of the races [during the season]. Even here, we were preaching that things don't have to be perfect to come away with the result that you want. You don't have to have perfection to pull it off." — Laurie Henes, NC State women's cross country coach, on her team's title-winning performance at nationals " She's a phenomenal athlete. She has phenomenal poten- tial. And obviously, we've been monitoring her for some time, and she's just getting stronger and stronger." — Spencer Nel, adidas' senior director of sports marketing for running, after his company signed NC State track and cross country champion KATELYN TUOHY to a sponsorship deal PHOTO BY KEN MARTIN PHOTO COURTESY NC STATE ATHLETICS
