6 ■ THE WOLFPACKER ■ WOLFPACK CLUB NEWS Eddie Wetherill grew up in Wrightsville Beach, N.C., with a fair share of North Carolina fans surrounding him. However, all it took for Eddie to be turned into a Wolfpacker for life was making a few trips to Carter-Finley Stadium in Raleigh. "I fell in love with it," Eddie said. "I wanted to come to NC State after those trips." The class of 1978 graduate would ar- rive at a golden era for Wolfpack athlet- ics. Eddie can recall not only seeing David Thompson play in person, but also having a chance to meet and talk with one of the greatest college basketball players of all time. "I got to see him out at Hillsborough Square and other places along Hillsbor- ough Street," Eddie noted. "He was a very friendly guy. You could talk to him all day long. David would sit there and talk to you, regardless of what school you at- tended." Eddie was also there when Hall of Famer Lou Holtz was winning ACC titles as the NC State football coach and when another College Football Hall of Famer, running back Ted Brown, was setting rushing records for the Wolfpack that still stand. Like many of his generation, watch- ing the 1983 men's basketball title run re- mains the highlight of his Pack fandom, even if the memory comes with a sliver of regret. "I had a brother call and ask me to go to Albuquerque," Eddie noted. "He went, and I didn't." When Eddie graduated from NC State, he briefly returned to Wrightsville Beach to figure out his future path. He then returned to Raleigh to begin a five-year stint at the North Carolina Department of Transportation, which Eddie labeled "a great experience." Other than one year in Greensboro, N.C., Eddie has lived in Raleigh ever since. He worked 10 years with an engineering consulting firm before helping to start Wetherill Engineering Inc. in 1993 with his wife, Debora. Founded to provide structural and roadway engineering services, the com- pany has since opened a branch in Char- lotte and grown into a multi-disciplinary engineering firm. Eddie is also proud of turning Debora, a North Carolina grad, into "the biggest ABC [Any But Carolina] fan" out there. Together, they remain strong supporters of NC State athletics, and that includes their involvement with the Wolfpack Club. "I joined the Wolfpack Club to help NC State. I wanted to help NC State get a step above everybody else," Eddie said. "I wanted to see what I could do to help them start beating Carolina not only on the field but by improving the overall im- pression of the school. "I think the people you get to know in the Wolfpack Club are from all areas, and the talent of these folks is really special. Their camaraderie is great." Those relationships are among the rea- sons you can likely spot Eddie strolling around the parking grounds of Carter- Finley Stadium on game day, traveling from one friend's tailgate to another. Eddie also relishes his chances to get back to his childhood home of Wrights- ville Beach and, perhaps as much as anything, spending time with his grow- ing family. Debora and Eddie have three daughters — Erin, Jessica and Alexis. Now there are six grandchildren, three boys (Brady, Austin and Ward) and three girls (Noel, Hollyn and Blake).
