28 THE WOLVERINE FEBRUARY 2023 28 THE WOLVERINE FEBRUARY 2023 2023 LOOK AHEAD BY CLAYTON SAYFIE T he end to Michigan's 2022 season came in a 51-45 loss to TCU New Year's Eve at the Fiesta Bowl — a bitter conclusion to a season so sweet, mostly because of how close the Wolver- ines were to playing in their first-ever national title game. The difference was a missed opportunity here or a mistake there. When the clock hit zero at State Farm Stadium, TCU whooped it up on the field. White and purple confetti fell like snow and littered the field. Michigan quarterback J.J. McCarthy and other players didn't rush to the locker room, instead taking in the scene and using it as motivation for the future. Stunningly, just like that, the Wolverines were on to next season, while still in disbelief that the prior one was no longer going. "We'll be back, and I promise that," McCarthy said. He wasn't alone. Player by player, including running back Donovan Edwards, the Wolverines insisted they will get their shot at a national crown again — not false bravado, but a be- lief they'll put in the work necessary to get there. Perhaps even more importantly, the Maize and Blue appear to have the firepower to do it. Between running back Blake Corum, nickel back Mike Sainristil and others like offensive guard Trevor Keegan deciding to come back for one last ride, plus an influx of talent from the transfer portal and the breadth of young talent that is emerging, Michi- gan has one of the brightest outlooks for 2023 out of any team in the sport. Out of the top seven teams in the final AP Poll — Georgia, TCU, U-M, Ohio State, Alabama, Tennessee and Penn State — Michi- gan is the only team with a returning starting quarterback. This is a projection — the program doesn't update scholarship statuses of any player after they sign letters of intent.
