4 THE WOLVERINE FEBRUARY 2023 IMMEDIATE REACTION TO JIM HARBAUGH STAYING AT U-M LET'S GOOOOOOO!!! Wolverinekim02 Glad this is done. Also find it to be dys- functional still. Coordinated message between Ono and Harbaugh again. Jim calls Santa and not Warde to state the news. And lastly the fact that we need to announce our coach, who still has mul- tiple years on his current contract re- maining, and no NFL offers, will continue to coach us. Go Blue, but dear Lord what an amateurish operation. RabidSquirrel Seems like his statement was written with intent for Warde. 2hf5forneyb … Simply put, our President's tweet is right up there with some of the most toxic public communications I have ever seen from a leader commenting on a subor - dinate. When [my former management consulting firm] was brought in to assess a toxic organization we were often able to trace back to some event like his tweet that started the ball rolling toward a bad culture. I'm hoping that he is just an excited sports junkie and got caught up in the moment, and that his tweet is not rep- resentative of his leadership style. But to publicly embarrass one of your leaders/ subordinates is simply bad business and poor leadership no matter how good or bad that person's performance may be. I'm not going to defend Warde too much, but I will say that he is one of our own, and Michigan has increased profits un- der his leadership, multiple B1G champi- onships in multiple sports, consistently high performance in the Directors' Cup, fiscal responsibility, navigated through the pandemic and oversaw a high character athletic department with minimal scandal across all our sports. I also have a different perspective on his relationship with Jim as well in that Jimmy was doing terrible, getting curb stomped by OSU, losing to MSU multiple times and multiple bowl losses all of which we all expressed frustration for on this board. Warde was in a tough spot — either fire Jim or cut his pay. I don't see how doing nothing was a legitimate option. While others may disagree, Warde lit a fire under Jim's *** and should be given some credit for that. That also may mean that Warde and Jimmy cannot now coexist as a result, but let's not pretend like Jimmy was doing great and Warde had an easy choice. … Ask yourself this, if/when Warde leaves and you were a top-flight AD can - didate, how would you view Santa's post above? Would it make you want to work for him? Would you have a high level of concern about the potential for a toxic culture or a meddling boss? tbg22 I understand what you're saying. But you won't find too many people over there who don't respect the hell out of the new president. And they certainly "trust" him. The vast, vast (vast!) majority. For many, he's the guy they've been waiting for. ChrisBalas I think it's a stretch to say he is publicly em - barrassing Warde. He's just clarifying who is in charge. If Warde doesn't like it, then he has two choices: get back in the game and do his job — which includes mending fences with Jim — or find a new job. And whomever the AD is should clearly under- stand that their boss is not going to stand for mediocrity. If a future candidate can't un- derstand that, then they aren't the right fit. . . . That attitude is going to extend beyond the AD, too. andrewhfine February 2023 • Vol. 34, No. 8 ISSN 1048-9940 Editor John Borton TheWolverine.com Editor Chris Balas Football Recruiting Editor EJ Holland Staff Writers Clayton Sayfie, Anthony Broome Zach Libby, Drew Hallett Managing Editor Mark Panus Contributing Editors Matt Herb Steve Downey Chris Riffer Layout And Design Jeanette Blankenship Chris Miller Contributing Photographers Lon Horwedel, Per Kjeldsen Dominick Sokotoff, Chad Weaver Cover Photo Lon Horwedel Publisher Stu Coman Business Manager Linda Autry Circulation Manager Sarah Boone Advertising Sales Michelle DeLee-Hamilton 877-630-8768 Customer Service Cathy Jones, Laura Thornton, Crystal Clayton 800-421-7751 The Wolverine is published monthly.
