56 THE WOLVERINE FEBRUARY 2023 OLYMPIC SPORTS UPDATE Men's Gymnastics No. 2 Michigan entered mid-January with an overall team record of 6-1 coming off a first-place finish against No. 14 Greenville and No. 15 Simpson on Jan. 7 in Ann Ar- bor. The Wolverines won all six team events and all individual events, which included sweeping the medal stand on each of the six events. Seven different Wolverine partici- pants won event titles, headlined by fresh- man Landen Blixt's win in the all-around. Michigan finished second among six teams in the Windy City Invitational at Chicago's Navy Pier on Jan. 14. Despite being without seniors Paul Juda and Crew Bold, U-M hit on 21 of 30 routines during the outing. Next up is the Rocky Mountain Open in Colorado on Jan. 21, which features the top four teams in the country in No. 1 Stanford, U-M, No. 3 Oklahoma and No. 4 Nebraska in addition to host school Air Force. Michigan closes out January with a home meet versus Ohio State on Jan. 28. Women's Gymnastics The No. 3 Wolverines (3-1 overall) earned the nation's first team score of 198.000 or higher (198.125) this season in their vic- tory over No. 9 Denver and Fisk on Jan. 13. The score ranks No. 4 all-time in Michigan women's gymnastics history. It is also the first time they have scored 198.000 or better in a meet at Crisler Center. U-M grabbed four titles on the evening, which included se- nior Sierra Brooks, graduate Abby Heiskell and senior Gabby Wilson tying for the all-around title. Next up is a road trip to Michigan State for a rivalry tilt with the Spartans on Jan. 22. Men's Swimming And Diving The 15th-ranked U-M men's swimmers competed in their first meet of the 2023 calendar year on Jan. 14 in Blooming- ton, Ind., dropping a 212-88 decision to fall to 5-3 on the season. Graduate student Jared Daigle nabbed the only two first-place finishes (1,000-yard freestyle, 200 IM) for Michi- gan, which also had eight second-place finishers on the day. The Wolverines host Ohio State for a home meet at Can- ham Natatorium on Jan. 21, with Wisconsin and Pittsburgh coming to Ann Arbor for showdowns on Jan. 28. Women's Swimming And Diving No. 13 Michigan fell by a score of 208.5-91.5 at Indiana on Jan. 14, dropping its team record to 5-4 on the season in its first meet of 2023. Freshmen Katie Crom and Brady Kendall grabbed the only first-place finishes on the day, but the Wolverines did post nine second-place finishes. U-M returns home on Jan. 21 for a meet versus Ohio State, with Wisconsin and Pittsburgh up next on Jan. 28. Water Polo U-M moved to 4-0 on the 2023 season with an 11-10 overtime win at Arizona State on Jan. 15. The No. 7-ranked Wolverines spent the season's opening weekend in Tempe, Ariz., for the ASU Challenge and swept the competition with wins over Biola (14-0), California Baptist (16-5), Azusa Pacific (18-6) and 10th-ranked ASU. Next up is the Bulldog Fest event in Fresno, Calif., which will see U-M take on Fresno State (Jan. 21), Hawaii (Jan. 21) and California (Jan. 22). Wrestling Graduate Jack Medley and redshirt junior Cameron Amine headlined a dominant win for No. 3 Michigan over No. 14 Wisconsin on Jan. 15, taking a 27-6 victory to move to 7-0 on the season. Medley defeated No. 5 Eric Barnett 12-6 while wrestling at 125 points, and No. 6 Amine took down No. 5 Dean Hamiti 5-3 in a 165-pound bout. Redshirt sophomore Dylan Ragusin (133) and graduate Matt Finesilver (184) grabbed bonus points with a major decision and technical fall, respectively. The Wolverines took eight of the 10 matches from the Badgers. A massive showdown follows on Jan. 20 with a meet at No. 1 Penn State, followed by a trip to Rutgers on Jan. 22.
