24 CAVALIER CORNER BY KRISTIN THURMAN T he Walsh sisters have reinvented the phrase "dynamic duo." They are not only team- mates and sisters, but they are also both NCAA champions and swimsuit designers. The Nashville, Tenn., natives have made a huge splash in the collegiate swim- ming world in just two years but have been making a splash internationally for many more. Alex, a third-year, and Gretchen, a second-year, have been able to take on each step together since they were kids. "I feel like having each other there was definitely important for us to just feel comfortable and also feel like we're not the only youngest ones there," Alex said. "As we were progressing onto the national stage and going to all these meets, you'd have to make a lot of sacrifices," Gretchen said. "Having each other to support one another through that with keeping our heads down and working all the time, you're gonna need a really good support system." That support system continued when the sisters both decided to compete for the University of Virginia. Alex joined the Cavaliers for the 2020-21 season and helped lead the UVA to its first national championship. One year later, Gretchen helped her sister and Virginia win its second straight national championship. During the 2021-22 season, the Walshes reminded the swimming world just how dominant the pair can be.
