74 THE WOLVERINE MARCH 2023 BY ANTHONY BROOME Women's Swimming And Diving U-M closed out the Big Ten Cham- pionships with a third-place finish at Canham Natatorium Feb. 15-18, total- ing 1,108 points. The group was led by freshman Katie Crom, who took home the gold medal in the 200-yard butter- fly with a personal-best time of 1:53.94. Crom was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Year and first-team All-Big Ten after one gold, one silver and a pair of bronze medal performances, scoring 86 points for the team. Eight Wolverines — Kiarra Milligan, Riley Francis, Lindsay Flynn, Letitia Sim, Megan Glass, Natalie Kan, Brady Kendall and Casey Chung — earned sec- ond-team All-Big Ten honors and the team had 11 NCAA 'B' cut times and one 'A' cut time during the event. Next is a Last Chance Meet at Ohio State Feb. 26 before the NCAA Zone Diving Championships March 6-8 in Bloomington, Ind., and the NCAA Championships from March 15-18 in Knoxville, Tenn. Men's Swimming And Diving The Wolverines closed out the January slate with a 151.5-148.5 loss to Ohio State at home Jan. 21 before taking show- downs with No. 24 Wisconsin (164-134) and Pittsburgh (194-106) Jan. 28, send- ing their record to 7-4 on the season. U-M took part in a First Chance Meet Feb. 11-12 at home in non-scoring events during the weekend. Michigan collected 4 NCAA 'B' cut times and had 18 per- sonal bests over the two-day span. Next up are Big Ten Championships in Ann Arbor set for Feb. 22-25. The NCAA Zone Diving Championships take place March 6-8 in Bloomington, Ind., with the NCAA Championships set for March 22-25 in Minneapolis. Men's Gymnastics U-M finished January with a fourth- place finish out of six teams at the Rocky Mountain Open in Colorado, then re- turned home Jan. 28 and grabbed a 409.200-404.000 victory over No. 5 Ohio State. Michigan opened Febru- ary with a 1-1 record, starting with a 407.400-406.250 win at No. 4 Nebraska and a 407.600-401.450 loss to No. 5 Penn State in Happy Valley, Pa. Next up is the Winter Cup Challenge Feb. 24-25 in Louisville, Ky., which will be broadcast via YouTube. The Wolver- ines close out the regular season with meets at Oklahoma March 4 and at home versus Illinois March 18. Women's Gymnastics Michigan dropped a rivalry tilt at No. 14 Michigan State (197.200-196.975) Jan. 22 before bouncing back with a victory over No. 11 Ohio State (197.975- 196.350) Jan. 28. The Wolverines opened February with a first-place finish at the Rutgers Quad meet Feb. 3 and grabbed a victory over No. 19 Minnesota in the Flip for Chip meet in Ann Arbor Feb. 10. The Feb. 17 meet at Nebraska was postponed until Feb. 27 due to COVID-19 within the Cornhuskers program. Before that, the No. 3-ranked Wolver- ines travel to Lincoln, Neb., Feb. 24 for the Big Five Meet against Illinois, Iowa, Maryland and Penn State. The regular season concludes with a meet at home versus No. 1 Oklahoma March 6 and a road trip to No. 14 Georgia March 10. Water Polo U-M went through a rough patch at the Bulldog Fest (Jan. 21-22) and Stan- ford Invite (Feb. 4-5) events where it dropped five of seven contests before sweeping the Bucknell Invite Feb. 11- 12 with wins over Bucknell, Saint Fran- cis and No. 21 Long Island University, boosting its record to 9-5 on the season. Next is a trip to Irvine, Calif., for the Barbara Kalbus Invitational that kicks off with a showdown against No. 8 Long Beach Feb. 24. The other opponents are TBD with the event running through Feb. 26. Wrestling No. 11 Michigan closed out its regular season with an 11-4 dual-meet record and a two-match win streak that in- cluded victories over No. 22 Indiana Feb. 12 and Central Michigan Feb. 19, both at Crisler Center. In the meet against CMU, Dylan Ragusin (133) and Cole Mattin (141) grabbed first-period pins, while Jack Medley (125), Matt Finesilver (184) and Mason Parris (heavyweight) each scored major decisions. The Wolverines await the Big Ten Championships, with the event set for March 4-5 in Ann Arbor. ❏   OLYMPIC SPORTS UPDATE Maize & Blue Winter Highlights Katie Crom was named Big Ten Freshman of the Year and first-team all-conference after claiming one gold, one silver and two bronze medals to help the U-M women's swimming and diving team take third place at the Big Ten Championships Feb. 15-18.
