TRACKING THE PACK MARCH/APRIL 2023 ■ 11 BY MATT CARTER The NC State men's bas- ketball team reaped the ben- efits of a thrilling win over North Carolina on Feb. 19. On3 Consensus four-star prospect Paul McNeil Jr. of Rockingham (N.C.) Rich- mond Senior High was in at- tendance for an official visit, and shortly afterward he an- nounced his verbal commit- ment to the Wolfpack. The On3 Consensus ranks McNeil as the No. 42 player and No. 12 shooting guard nationally among juniors. He is also listed as the No. 5 prospect in a loaded and deep in-state class in 2024. "Paul McNeil is a shot- maker, there is no denying this," On3's analyst Jamie Shaw noted. "Anyone courtside watching him play sees that shooting is his thing. "Where McNeil has grown is in his foot- work and body control. He is now learning how to be a shot-maker in- stead of just hoisting tough shots. His game has a growing disci- pline, and the efficiency is following. " Fe we r d r i b b l e s , fewer steps, and more work ahead of receiving the pass have rendered eye-opening results. I'm eager to see how he continues to grow." T h e 6 - f o o t - 6 , 185-pound McNeil had a lengthy offer list that also included Alabama, Clemson, Georgetown, Illinois, Indiana, LSU, Miami, Missouri, Ne- braska, St. John's, Tennessee and Virginia Tech, among others. As a sophomore, McNeil was named the Gatorade North Carolina Boys Bas- ketball Player of the Year after he averaged 24.5 points, 9.7 rebounds, 3.8 assists, 1.8 blocks and 1.7 steals per game for a 26-2 Raiders squad. He was the first sopho- more to win that award in the state. Through 18 games this season, McNeil was averaging 23.9 points, 8.7 rebounds, 4.4 assists, 2.4 steals and 1.3 blocks. He had made 55 three-pointers and was shooting 38.7 percent from beyond the arc. McNeil is the first NC State basketball commitment in the 2024 class. Next season, the Pack is set to bring in at least two newcomers in wing forward Dennis Parker II of Richmond (Va.) John Marshall and point guard Trey Parker (no relation), a native of Fayetteville, N.C., who is playing with Overtime Elite in At- lanta. OTE is a semi-pro league for high school players. Both Parkers have received four-star ratings in the On3 Consensus. Trey Parker is ranked the No. 76 player nationally in the 2023 class, while Dennis Parker checks in at No. 95. ■ Paul McNeil Jr. of Rockingham (N.C.)
