IRISH IN THE PROS BLUEGOLDONLINE.COM APRIL 2023 51 Kelly left to take the head coaching job at LSU immediately after the 2021 regu- lar season when Coan was still there, and Rees recently departed to take the offen- sive coordinator job at Alabama. "I congratulated him," Coan said of Rees. "And I'm excited to follow Ala- bama now and root for Coach Rees." During his lone season at Notre Dame in 2021, Coan made an immediate im- pact, completing 65.6 percent of his passes for 3,150 yards with 25 touch- downs, and 7 interceptions. In the pro- cess, he led the Irish to an 11-2 record and a Fiesta Bowl appearance against Oklahoma State. ✦ FIGHTING IRISH HEADLINERS Matt Ryan (Played at Notre Dame from 2015-17), F, Minnesota Timberwolves (NBA) One of the feel-good stories of the NBA season, the former Irish sharpshooter went from working as a cemetery landscaper and a DoorDash driver when he was picked up by the Celtics last year, before landing with the Lakers to start this 2022-23 season. Ryan, 25, was cut by the Lakers in December and was immediately picked up by the Timberwolves where he was averaging 8.7 minutes and 3.8 points through 20 games as of Feb. 26. Anders Lee (2010-13), LW, New York Islanders (NHL) Playing in his 11th NHL season — all with the Islanders — Lee is putting together one of his best. Through 60 games as of Feb. 26, Lee had 22 goals and 20 assists for 42 points. With 19 regular-season games remaining, the 32-year-old Lee has a chance to reach or surpass his career-best 62 points in a single season (40 goals, 22 assists) that he recorded in 2017. Kyle Hamilton (2019-21), S, Baltimore Ravens (NFL) Pro Football Focus ranked the former Notre Dame and current Ravens safety 91st on its list of the top 101 players of the 2022 NFL season. Hamilton was the highest- graded safety in the league at 82.6. "Baltimore's rookie safety had people worried in the preseason after some tough reps in practice and preseason games, but he looked like the assured college star once the games counted for real in the regular season," PFF's Sam Monson noted. "He became particularly adept as the season wore on at covering the slot against tight ends and running backs."
