32 ■ THE WOLFPACKER BY MATT CARTER eeping the spring game in proper perspective is always a challenge, given that is all NC State foot- ball fans will have to go by between the last seconds of the Duke's Mayo Bowl against Maryland and the season opener in September at Con- necticut. With that in mind, here are five obser- vations from the scrimmage and spring practices. Pecking Order At Quarterback? If NC State is still having a quarterback competition for this fall, the spring game at a minimum indicated that a pecking order is emerging. Brennan Armstrong, a super senior who transferred from Virginia in Janu- ary, took every snap with the NC State Red Team, which comprised the primary starters and front-line players on the depth chart. Meanwhile, the Wolfpack's White Team, which was filled with younger players and walk-ons, was quarter- backed by sophomore MJ Morris and fourth-year redshirt sophomore Ben Finley. At the break, their numbers were: • Armstrong: 14-of-28 passing for 127 yards and 2 interceptions • Morris: 3-of-4 passing for 27 yards, with 3 sacks • Finley: 1-of-3 passing for minus-1 yard and an interception Armstrong sat out the second half, while Morris received reps with the Red Team and Finley continued to work with the White Team. Morris threw two nice strikes on his final drive, including a 43- yard slot post route to freshman Kevin Concepcion.
