18 JUNE/JULY 2023 BLUE & GOLD ILLUSTRATED counted for 190 yards all by himself. The Gold team only generated 119 yards of offense after Hartman departed. The Blue team had 56 the entire game. There were plenty of stout defensive performances on both sides, but Hart- man was the story of the day. And, as it turns out, so big of a story that he unintentionally pushed his backup into the transfer portal. Who said spring games don't count for anything? FIRST QUARTER GOLD 14, BLUE 0 Top Moment: It wasn't one of the touchdowns. It was when Hartman found junior wide receiver Jayden Thomas downfield for a gain of 46 yards. Hartman was brought in to im- prove Notre Dame's vertical passing at- tack. He showed he can do that on the perfectly placed deep post to Thomas. Feature Performer: Hartman. He threw a touchdown pass to Thomas on a 9-yard screen on the first drive of the game, and he ran in a 1-yard score on the second on a smooth-looking goal-line run-pass option. Hartman was 9-of-10 passing for 145 yards in the first quarter. Stats: The Gold team outgained the Blue team 179 to 16 in total yards. The Gold team had 9 first downs to the Blue team's 2. The Gold team possessed the ball for 9:58 to the Blue team's 5:02. The Gold team averaged 9.9 yards per play to the Blue team's 1.3. Items: Sophomore running back Gi'Bran Payne had a 30-yard carry to set up the Gold team's first touchdown … Senior defensive end Jordan Botelho strip-sacked Buchner on the first play from scrimmage for the Blue team … Graduate student nose tackle Howard Cross III had a sack on third down … Two plays after freshman linebacker Jaiden Ausberry nearly had a pick-six, sophomore cornerback Jaden Mickey intercepted Buchner on a deep ball. SECOND QUARTER GOLD 21, BLUE 0 Top Moment: On Hartman's final throw of his day, he waited for graduate student wideout Matt Salerno's corner route to develop and fired for the back left corner of the end zone at just the right time for a 13-yard scoring strike. Feature Performer: Three of sopho- more linebacker Jaylen Sneed's seven tackles came in the second quarter. Two of them came on back-to-back plays, including an edge-setting sideline tackle of senior wide receiver Chris Tyree. Freshman wide receiver Jaden Greathouse led all pass catchers with 11 receptions for 118 yards in the Blue-Gold Game. PHOTO BY CHAD WEAVER
