Zach Hyman (played at U-M from 2012-15), C, Edmonton Oil- ers: Posted 3 goals and 8 assists with a plus-1 on-ice rating in 12 playoff games, helping the Oilers advance to the sec- ond round … Scored the game-winning goal, a wrist shot from the left wing, and added an assist to tie the first-round series against the Los Angeles Kings at 2-2 April 23. 2. Matty Beniers (2021-22), C, Seattle Kraken: Tallied 3 goals and 4 assists in 13 playoff contests, with a plus-6 on-ice rating … Scored his first postseason goal to tie the game at 3-3 in a Game 3 loss to the Colorado Ava- lanche in the first round … The Kraken and Dallas Stars second-round series is tied 3-3 … Named a finalist for the Calder Trophy, handed to the league's top rookie, along with fellow Wolver- ine Owen Power of the Buffalo Sabres and Edmonton's Stuart Skinner … The 20-year-old led NHL rookies in points (57) and plus-minus rating (plus-14), was tied for the league lead in goals (24) and finished second in assists (33) in 80 games. 3. Kyle Connor (2016), LW, Winni- peg Jets: Posted 3 goals and 1 assist in five playoff contests … His 25 career points in the playoffs (12 goals, 13 assists) tied him for the third most in franchise history … His Jets fell to the Las Vegas Golden Knights in five games in the first round. 4. Luke Hughes (2021-23), D, New Jersey Devils: Made his playoff debut in Game 3 of the team's second-round series against the Carolina Hurricanes, totaling 2 assists in the 8-4 win … The club lost the series, 4-1 … Hughes played in two other contests. 5. J.T. Compher (2014-16), LW, Colorado Avalanche: His team lost in seven games in the first round to the Se- attle Kraken … Totaled 1 goal and 1 assist in the series … Now has 29 career points (14 goals, 15 assists) in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. FORMER WOLVERINES IN THE MLB Through May 14 • Jake Cronenworth (played at U-M from 2013-15), IF, San Diego Padres: Appeared in 39 games for the 19-22 Pa- dres, batting .216 with 30 hits, 8 doubles, 3 home runs and 14 RBI. • Rich Hill (2000-02), LHP, Pitts- burgh Pirates: Started eight games for the 22-19 Pirates, owning a 3-3 record … Posted a 4.35 ERA and 1.48 WHIP (walks and hits per inning) with 36 strikeouts in 41.1 innings of work. ❏ Nick Rowlett • PLL The men's lacrosse graduate student and faceoff specialist was taken with the No. 23 overall pick in the third round of the 2023 Premier Lacrosse League Draft, by the Chaos. At the time of his selection, he had won 57 percent of his faceoffs on the season (136-of- 327), good for 18th in the NCAA. This season, he became the first Wolverine in history to secure 300 ground balls. He also held the school record with 496 faceoffs. He joins Brent Noseworthy (2019) as Wolverines to be drafted to the PLL. They're two of seven U-M products to be drafted by a professional outdoor lacrosse franchise. Erik Portillo • NHL The Michigan goaltender signed a two-year contract with the Los Angeles Kings April 22. He played in 87 games with 85 starts during his three-year U-M career, posting a 60-22-3 record. Ronnie Bell • NFL The former Michigan wide receiver and San Francisco 49ers' seventh-round draft choice signed his contract, decided on the jersey No. 10 and shined in his first rookie mini-camp practice. According to the San Jose Mercury News, Bell "highlighted the session with several outstanding catches" May 12. — Clayton Sayfie HEADLINERS Former Michigan athletes in the news this month Left winger Zach Hyman posted 3 goals and 8 assists with a plus-1 on-ice rating in 12 playoff games, helping the Edmonton Oilers advance to the second round of the Stanley Cup playoffs before falling in six games (4-2) to the Las Vegas Knights May 14.
