JUNE 2023 11 cavalier sports Lexi Cuomo • Swimming & Diving The fourth-year from Clifton, Va., was named the women's swimming and diving Division I College Sports Communica- tors Academic All-America Team Member of the Year. She earned the honor after posting a 3.98 GPA in chemical engineering in the fall semester at UVA. Cuomo has been a key contributor on Virginia's three straight NCAA Championship teams, accumu- lating 19 All-America honors and taking part in four NCAA-winning relay teams. Jack Eliason • Track & Field The third-year from Crozet, Va., ran his first-ever sub-four minute mile at the Virginia High Performance meet April 30. He posted a time of 3:59.64 en route to a second-place finish to become the seventh active member of the pro- gram to run under four minutes in the mile. Eliason posted consecutive personal bests over the course of three meets in the 1,500 meters (3:42.07), the 5,000 meters (13:47.07) and the mile. Chris Rodesch • Tennis The third-year from Angelsberg, Luxembourg, earned first-team All-ACC accolades and was named the MVP of the 2023 ACC Championship after helping UVA win both the regular-season and tournament titles. He then capped his stellar season by being named MVP of the NCAA Tournament after leading the Wa- hoos to their second straight national championship. Rodesch won his last 13 singles matches en route to a 27-6 record, which included an 18-1 mark at the No. 1 singles position. Aubrey Williams • Lacrosse The third-year midfielder from Purcellville, Va., became UVA's all- time leader in draw controls, sur- passing previous record-holder Maggie Jackson's 301 with a career-high 15 in an 18-12 win over VCU April 5. Williams finished the year with 333. A second-team All-ACC selection and an honorable mention All-American per US Lacrosse Magazine, Williams ranked 11th in the nation with 7.44 draw controls per game as of May 26. HOO'S HOT Recognizing the "Who's Hoo" in UVA athletics — Cavalier student-athletes, past, present and future who are making news around the world of sports. " The success Tony Bennett and Virginia have had with big men is evident and that was something that really played a part in my decision. Obviously, something like that played a big part in my decision." — Anthony Robinson — a 6-10, 230-pound three-star center from Arden (N.C.) Christ School — on committing to the Cavaliers April 30 (CavsCorner.com); he is now part of three-man class that was No. 36 in the country in the On3 Industry Ranking as of May 26 159TH Overall pick in the fifth round to the Green Bay Packers was where Virginia wide receiver Dontayvion Wicks was selected in the 2023 NFL Draft. He is the first Cavalier selected by the Packers since quarterback Aaron Brooks in 1999. Wicks set the UVA single-season receiv- ing yards record with 1,203 yards in 2021, breaking the mark held previously by NFL standout Herman Moore. He finished his Virginia career 12th on school's career receiving yards list (1,694). 2 Of the 29 players in Division I baseball that batted .400 or better during college baseball's regular season suit up for the Cavaliers: third-year catcher Kyle Teel (11th, .414) and second-year shortstop Griff O'Ferrall (20th, .404). UVA was one of three schools with multiple players that hit .400 (Sam Houston and Stanford also had two). Teel, who was tabbed as the ACC Player of the Year by the league's coaches, and O'Ferrall combined for the most hits (182, 91 each) by a duo in the country. 1 , 781 Faceoff attempts for Virginia graduate student midfielder PETEY LASALLA at the conclusion of his UVA career. He be- came the NCAA Division I all-time leader April 25 against Lafayette and continued extending his record from there. His .590 faceoff percentage (1,050 of 1,781) ranks fifth in school history.
