10 CAVALIER CORNER cavalier sports 7 Schools have won at least two of the 31 2022-23 NCAA championships that had been decided as of May 31. Stanford leads the way with three (men's gymnastics, women's water polo and rowing), while Virginia (women's swimming and diving, men's tennis), Arkansas (men's and women's indoor track and field), Cali- fornia (men's water polo, men's swim- ming and diving), North Carolina (field hockey, women's tennis), Notre Dame (fencing and men's lacrosse) and UCLA (women's soccer and men's volleyball) have each won a pair of national titles. 4 New additions for the UVA women's basketball program since the end of the 2022-23 season. The Cava- liers landed three transfers — PARIS CLARK (Arizona), Taylor Lauterbach (Kansas State) and Jillian Brown (Northwestern) — and one recruit, Sweden native Edessa Noyan. Clark, a 5-foot-8 guard, was a 2022 McDonald's High School All-American and the New York State Gatorade Player of the Year out of Long Island (N.Y.) Lutheran High School, where she averaged 25.2 points, 8.3 rebounds, 6.1 assists and 4.0 steals during her prep career. She was also a Jordan Brand and SLAM All-American, and she was ranked No. 21 in the HoopGurlz/espnW Class of 2022 recruit rankings. She appeared in 24 games in her lone campaign at Arizona and averaged 3.8 points. Lauterbach, a 6-foot-7 center, was a top- 100 prospect coming out of Appleton (Wis.) West High, ranked as the No. 12 recruit at her position for the class of 2020 by Hoop- Gurlz/espnW. She averaged 1.5 points and 1.9 rebounds in 75 contests with Kansas State. Brown, a 5-foot-10 guard, was rated the No. 44 overall recruit in the 2021 class by Prospect Nation and was slotted at No. 50 by HoopGurlz/espnW coming out of East Grand Rapids (Mich.) High School. She started 34 of 57 games the past two years, while produc- ing averages of 7.2 points and 3.6 rebounds. Noyan, a 6-foot-3 forward, helped the Swedish U18 Junior National Team win the 2022 Nordic Championships, averaging 18.8 points per game while also pacing the squad in rebounding during their run. No. 19 Ranking for UVA men's basketball in On3's Transfer Portal Rankings as of May 31, fourth among ACC schools, behind Wake Forest (No. 3), North Carolina State (No. 9) and Clemson (No. 16). The Cavaliers have three outgoing trans- fers — 6-10, 230-pound power forward Isaac Traudt (committed to Creighton, March 31), 7-0, 215-pound center Francisco Caffaro (Santa Clara, April 10) and 6-11, 200-pound center Kadin Shedrick (Texas, April 23) — and four incoming transfers — 6-0, 175-pound Georgetown guard Dante Harris (committed Dec. 18), 6-8, 240-pound Merrimack center Jor- dan Minor (April 13), 6-4, 160-pound St. Thomas (Minn.) guard Andrew Rohde (April 18) and 6-9, 216-pound Oklahoma forward Jacob Groves (April 25). Two of UVA's three spring additions are com- ing off very productive seasons at their previ- ous schools. Minor averaged 17.4 points, 9.4 rebounds, 2.6 blocks and 1.4 steals per game en route to Northeast Conference Co-Player of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year and first-team All-NEC honors, while Rohde posted 17.1 points, 3.8 rebounds and 3.7 assists per game en route to first-team All-Summit League, Freshman of the Year and All-New- comer Team accolades. Groves contributed 6.8 points and 2.5 rebounds in his second season with the Sooners last year. " Of course, I thought about leaving. But I also thought, 'What better place to refind who I am?' I could have left, I could have transferred, but I think of that as sweeping things under the rug and not handling the situation as best as I could. The best place for me to move forward, not move on but move forward, is in Charlottesville with the people who shared that experience with me. "No one across the country feels the way we feel here in the facility. No one in the country knows how I feel about the situation besides the people here in this facility, and I got an uneasy feeling when I thought about leaving. I'm glad I stayed because the support is what I need right now to get through." — UVA fifth-year running back MIKE HOLLINS, who was shot during the tragedy that took three of his teammates' lives in the fall 6 Of the 10 NCAA men's tennis national championships from 2013-2023 (the 2020 event was canceled by the COVID-19 pandemic) have been won by the Virginia Cavaliers.
