24 THE WOLVERINE ❱ SEPTEMBER 2023 BY CHRIS BALAS M ichigan head coach Jim Harbaugh remains in the news for alleged improper contact with a recruit dat- ing back to 2020, when COVID was running rampant and measures were put into place limiting on-campus re- cruiting. Sources and reports indicated an impromptu visit from one prospect ended with Harbaugh buying the player a cheeseburger before sending him on his way, and then not being forthcoming about it when asked (though others have said he simply stated he didn't remember the dates). Predictably, this incident and the en- suing coverage of it made it a hot topic at Big Ten Media Days in late July. Har- baugh made it clear from the outset that he was under a gag order to not discuss it, but that didn't stop several from trying. "I'm with you. I'd love to lay it all out there," Harbaugh told reporters at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. "[It's] noth- ing to be ashamed of. But now is not that time. That's all there is to say about that." "We are continuing to work coop- eratively with the NCAA staff on an enforcement matter," Michigan athlet- ics director Warde Manuel had said in a statement released earlier in the week. "At this time, we cannot comment fur- ther on any aspect of the matter."
